Culture of Lubeck. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

Each city sight of Lübeck is a unique historical landmark. To explore the main places of interest in Lübeck the tourists are recommended to cruise the city central streets on foot. The private residence of the 18th century named Behnhaus located in the Königstrasse is a great architectural masterpiece. Simple building with Rayonnants and traditional front side is nowadays turned to a museum. Among the presented museum showpieces one will find the paintings of Friedrich Overbeck and other painters of the edge of 19th – 20th centuries.

The private residence Buddenbrookhaus is of the same cultural interest and historical importance. The residence was built in the first part of the 19th century. This landmark will be of greater interest for genuine gourmands as the magnificent building hosts an upscale restaurant serving ethnic cuisine. The symbolic landmark of the city is the Holstentor. It is a part of the fortifying construction which was erected in Lübeck in the middle of the 15th century.
After savoring the impressive look of the ancient gateway the tourists can visit the Historical Museum set in close vicinity to the landmark. Its vast collection numbers in the thousands of priceless showpieces among which one will find ancient arms, domestic objects, historical documents and art objects. In the heart of the historical part of Lübeck one will find the Town Hall. The construction of this unique building started in the 13th century and lasted for about one hundred years. The main construction material was rare glazed bricks. The ancient Town Hall is considered to be the most beautiful construction of the city as well as the best town hall of the country. Tourists should also visit the Hospital of Holy Ghost which was established by local merchants in 1280. Initially it served as a refugee for homeless people and later on the scale building was turned to a hospital. Today a part of the building is reengineered and reequipped to a museum. The spacious halls of the former hospital keep the unique fresco paintings of the 14th century as well as medieval sanctuaries. The appearance of the hospital is another point of interest. The graceful building of red bricks is crowned with elegant turrets of turquoise blue. Among other landmarks of the city one should visit the Lübeck Cathedral and the St Anne's Museum.
The unchanged symbol of the city is a monument installed on the city's picturesque waterfront Passathafen. Of course, this is about Viermastbark Passat that was used as a cargo ship between Europe and Latin America until the 1950s. The ship was once the property of Gustav Ericsson. Having miraculously avoided flooding in a storm in 1957, the ship was decommissioned and turned into a museum ship already in 1959. Tourists are fascinated by wonderful “walks” through the cargo compartments, the captain’s cabin, as well as the study of mechanisms that help to understand how everything works on the ship.
Lübeck has a lot of interesting specialty stores, and Niederegger is the one offering wonderful locally made marzipan. It has a cozy cafe and is located near the Market Square, under one … Open
From a historical point of view, Löwen Apotheke is of great value. It is one of the oldest structures in the city built in the middle of the 13th century. Originally, the style was Romanesque, but after numerous reconstructions and restorations, this architectural style was replaced by the Gothic. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were attempts to demolish the pharmacy, but the townspeople restored the historical monument on their own initiative and for their own money. The building was damaged during the Second World War, but local authorities restored the pharmacy immediately afterward (interestingly, it was restored even earlier than Lübeck churches destroyed for the same reason).
The most picturesque place in Lübeck is the small fishing village of Gotmund - a fabulous corner in a modern city. It is here where the characters of Grimms' Fairy Tales could live, which comes to mind when imagining narrow streets, fairy-tale houses with thatched roofs and cozy courtyards, and fishing boats in the harbor. For fans of such picturesque and peaceful places, the village is of particular value. Those who want to enjoy great theatrical performances must visit the Zaubertheater with its fabulous atmosphere. No less exciting would be a walk through one of the picturesque parks of Lübeck - for example, Dragerpark or Schulgarten.

Among other museums that are of great interest to tourists wishing to explore the local culture, a few more should be mentioned. As is known, Lubeck was a major port of the Hanseatic League, and the European Hansemuseum is dedicated to this. Among its exhibits are copies of historical documents, antiques. Particular attention is paid to the life of merchants for whom life was not all sweet away from home. But the most interesting thing is how the information is presented here - even children like it, even though most museums are boring for them. The Theaterfigurenmuseum offers a wonderful collection of figures that were once used as puppets in a puppet theater. This is another good museum to visit with young tourists.
Art connoisseurs will be happy to visit the Museum Behnhaus Draegerhaus, which houses a magnificent collection of artworks of impressionists, expressionists, as well as Rococo, Classicism, and Biedermeier. Many visitors are impressed by the so-called “sculpture garden” of William Breck. The 4th Federal Chancellor of Germany, Willy Brandt, was born in Lübeck, and now his house is converted into a museum. It would be interesting for those who are interested in the life of the German politician and want to see the situation in which the laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize once lived. The house of another famous German man - Gunter Grass - is now a museum too. This is a must-have for those interested in the work of the writer and artist.
