Burgplatz Square is known as the center of the city. It was founded yet in the medieval times. In the 12th century the square was extended by order of Heinrich der Löwe and there was installed the monument devoted to the duke – a figure of a powerful lion. The square is also the place for the magnificent Dankwarderode Castle – a former residence of the duke. The church of St Blasius and Fiveg House are located nearby. By the way, the statue of the bronze lion installed on the square is the copy of the medieval original, which is now stored in one of halls of the local fortress. The church of St Blasius was also built by order of Heinrich to immortalize the return of the duke from Palestine. Later the church became the home for the tomb of the duke and his wife Matilda. This tomb is considered one of the most important cultural values and is recommended for visiting. Another relic stored here has truly international fame and value. This is the wooden crucifix created by Imervard. Each year thousands of pilgrims come to this church to see the legendary sacred artifact by their own eyes.
You can finish your observation of Braunschweig’s places of interest by attending an excursion to an ancient town hall – a magnificent gothic building created during medieval times. The town hall is decorated by thick and solid columns that feature the figures of great leaders of that time and their wives. Here you will see the portraits of welfian and ottonian emperors, kings and dukes who greatly influenced on the history and development of the whole country. Copyright www.orangesmile.com
