The city was founded in 1214 as a residence of count Ravensberg. The symbol of the city is Teutoburger Wald. Bielefeld was completely restored in 1879.

This town is widely famous for its unique medical rehabilitation center for people with mental diseases. Around 6,000 people constantly work, study or get medical treatment here. The number of staff of this center exceeds 9,000 people. In Bielefeld you will also find numerous children’s homes, recreation centers and custodial institutions.

While talking about Bielefeld, we definitely must mention that this town is widely known as the largest scientific center in Germany.

The main religion of this town is Catholicism. In medieval times the town was founded on the crossing of trading routes, so no wonder its infrastructure developed quickly. Today we can see this in rich heritage available for tourists. Here can be found numerous historical and architectural values from different epochs and different nations. There’s also an opinion that Bielefeld is the place where have been invented sand clocks. Even if it’s not true, in Bielefeld traditionally have been manufactured sand clocks for whole world. No less interesting historical object is St. Mary’s Church, that was built in the 15th century and is a beautiful monument in the Gothic style. Part of the interior decoration of the church was preserved for centuries; within its walls unique ancient crucifixes and icons can be found today. Some religious valuables are stored in this church for over 300 years. In the 15th - 17th centuries on the territory of the church were buried members of several noble families. 

A good place for walks is the historic Alter Markt square, next to which is many points of interest are present. In the centre of the square is a beautiful fountain of Mercury, and next to it you can see a number of historic buildings, one of the most beautiful is considered to be the Cruewell house. Nearby is the spectacular building of the old Town Hall, which is now occupied by the popular theatre. 

There are several interesting museums in Bielefeld, one of the most unusual is considered to be the peasant museum. It was opened in 1917, today in this huge open-air museum there is a collection of unique items. Its visitors can see the old mill, as well as visit the most authentic old bakery, which has been restored to the looks of previous years as closely as possible. 

For tourists with children it will be interesting to visit the Museum of Natural History, which is located in a beautiful 17th century mansion. The pride of the museum is the rich collection of minerals, but also it is equipped with a number of interesting exhibitions devoted to the world of plants and animals. This museum often holds interesting themed events and exhibitions, as well as provides special activities for children.
