Beautiful and ancient city of Duisburg traditionally attracts tourists by its places of interest and various cultural sites. Despite the fact that the city was severely damaged during the Second World War, a number of interesting architectural and historical monuments have survived in its territory. The majority of sightseeing tours start from a visit to Dreigiebelhaus – one of the oldest buildings in Duisburg. Despite its age the house has been preserved to this day in its original form. The building of the house was completed in the middle of the 16th century. Today its premises are occupied by numerous art galleries and studios.
Tourists can learn about most important historical events and explore a collection of priceless exhibits in Museum of Urban History and Culture. The most famous cultural institution of Duisburg is located in an old flour mill. The globe of the internationally famous scientist and researcher Gerhard Mercator is considered the most valuable item in the museum. Besides this, the museum features an interesting collection of historical and ethnographic artifacts, and works of art, some of which relate to the period of the early Middle Ages.

A beautiful sculpture of the Milan Madonna is located in the cathedral. It is also considered an outstanding sculptural creation in the Gothic style. Many beautiful legends are associated with Cologne Cathedral. According to one of them, the devil helped the architect Gerhard make drawings of the unique facade. The architect's wife managed to outwit the devil and save her husband's soul from a terrible fate. The year 1901 is considered the official date of the museum's foundation. It occupied several rooms in the city hall building for the first three years of its existence. The museum moved to the former Protestant school building in 1904. It was located there until 1925. The museum was moved to the Karl-Brandt House in 1926. It stayed there until 1944. This historic building was destroyed during the Second World War. So the museum had to find a new location. It was located in the Oskar-Kühlen-Haus building until 1982.
