Culture of Baden-Baden. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

Palais des Festivals occupies an honorable place among the sights of the city. The wonderful palace was opened in April 1998. Nowadays this beautiful building is home to cultural institutions – an opera theater and a concert hall. Palais des Festivals can accommodate up to two and a half thousand visitors at a time. We have the full right to call the palace the most ambitious institution of its kind in Germany. If you want to visit the family homes of notable people, move your feet to the house-museum of Johannes Brahms, a famous German composer. Brahms lived in the city for just nine years. Despite the fact that the internationally famous composer had homes in other German cities, the apartment in Baden-Baden is considered his family house. Every two years the museum organizes a holiday dedicated to the memory of the great composer.

A walk on one of the oldest streets of the city, Sophienstrasse, will surely leave lots of positive memories and impressions. This is simply a perfect place to see beautiful old mansions, ancient Roman baths and cozy alleys with benches and gazebos. The first floors of many homes have been turned into open air restaurants and cafes, so you can pleasantly combine the inspection of architectural attractions with the degustation of the national dishes. Stiftskirche church is a well-known religious landmark of Baden-Baden. The history of this beautiful religious attraction exceeds several hundred years. The first building on the place of the original church was built yet in the early medieval period. That was a modest monastery church, which had been built in accordance with the best traditions of the Romanesque style. Steadily the church was supplemented by new buildings, and in the 18th century not even a trace remained from the original design of the first church. The temple, which can be seen today, is a magnificent example of the late Gothic style. The entrance to the shrine is decorated with a statue of Ludwig Wilhelm.
Probably, New Castle remains the most famous architectural landmark of the city. The building of the castle was completed in 1479. For a long time it remained the main residence of the Margraves. The building was severely damaged, when Baden-Baden was entered by the French troops. Thanks to the work of the modern architects, nowadays the castle is completely restored. The grapes, which are grown on the famous Rebland plantations, are another important symbol of the city. Vineyards are also widely known as an important object of the excursions. During a walk here the participants of the excursion can enjoy a walk among the huge vineyards, learn a lot about the methods of production of wine and taste the best varieties of the famous grape drink. One prominent attraction is the Trinkhalle, a building that seems to have been built during the time of the Roman Empire. As a matter of fact, it was only erected in the 19th century, based on the Roman style. Notable features of the place are Corinthian columns and frescoes which illustrates stories of Baden-Baden legends. It is possible to discover water inside, however it is not drinkable. The building is located near the Kurhaus. On the outside, the building is different from all the others. This means that it definitely cannot be ignored.
Across the canal at Baden Baden One of the main attractions of the city is the Wasserkunstanlage Paradies. This is a kind of architectural complex of gardens, parks and basins. On the way to it, you will come across beautiful villas, which will also bring aesthetic pleasure as you admire them. Having discovered a cascade of many pools, the heart of every tourist will beat faster – such a beauty will be revealed to the eye. The cascade is framed by green couloirs with niches for relaxation. Another beautiful “viewing platform” is the Alt Eberstein castle, from which opens up beautiful views of the Rhine, the city, as well as its surroundings. The castle was built in the 11th century. At the moment, tourists look forward to only an acquaintance with its ruins as the castle itself was destroyed in the 17th-18th centuries.

Great views of Baden-Baden and Schwarzwald can be beheld from MerkurBergbahn. You can get to the mountain by the funicular or by bus. The mountain itself is an interesting natural attraction; it is also a pleasure to watch from the city. There are also interesting religious monuments in the city. One of such is Eglise Russe, built for the reason that the Russian community in the city is quite strong. The building was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century and implemented in the best traditions of the Orthodox style. Another sacred monument is Cistercienserinnen-Abtei Lichtenthal. It was founded in 1245 and is one of the oldest monasteries in the entire region. It is very quiet here and the whole atmosphere evokes pacification.
Baden-Baden The name of the city confirms the fact that the city even from the ancient times had functional baths. On its territory there used to be a large number of Roman baths and mineral springs. However, only ruins are left of many of them today. In the second half of the 19th century, the ruins of Romische Thermen were restored. It is believed that they are about 2,000 years old. Also at this time, was built the Friedrichsbad Roman-Irish Bath on the basis of the Roman style. The Caracalla Therme was built relatively recently, with everything here done with the latest technology. Nearby is situated the ruins of the Roman baths, which gives a special color to the area. Especially beautiful sculptures are located next to the thermal baths.
