The historical center of Skiathos is its capital - the city of the same name. There are numerous old buildings on its territory; the stroll through the picturesque streets will give a lot of impressions. Special attention should be paid to the house of famous writer Alexandros Papadiamantis. It was converted into a museum; now it introduces the life and works of the painter to visitors. Above the city rises the Castro cliff, on top of which in the 16th century the fortress was built. According to rough estimates, there were about three hundred houses and at least 30 churches on its territory; only two religious buildings have remained to these days. An important historical object is the monastery of Evangelistria. In 1807, in its walls there was a significant event - the contemporary Greek flag was raised for the first time.
