Sightseeing in Pylos - what to see. Complete travel guide

This is a small and cozy Greek town that will be exceptionally attractive to fans of quiet rest and comfort. Many people call Pylos "a little Switzerland". The reason for this is in the fact that the town’s small houses with white facades, which are surrounded by lush greenery and flower beds, really look like streets of Switzerland. Besides comfortable environment tourists are attracted by high level of service. Add here low prices and you will understand why many consider Pylos an ideal vacation spot.
In addition to visiting beautiful beaches, parks, and restaurants guests can visit several places of interest and get acquainted with the history of the city. Neokastro Castle founded in 1573is one of the largest buildings in this town. Originally the castle served as a protective facility. The top of the castle is decorated with an acropolis, and its territory is also the location of an ancient Transfiguration Church. After the conquering of the town by the Turks the gothic church was converted into a mosque. The tower of Palekastro Castle is considered the highest point of Pylos. This is another protective facility, which was built in 1278.
The town and its suburbs are a real treasure for archaeologists. During the excavations many valuable artifacts were found in this place. Nowadays you can see these items in the local archaeological museum. Here you will find a collection of ancient clay tablets, tableware and amphorae. Copyright www.orangesmile.com
As the town is rather small you will not find here large entertainment and shopping centers. However, there is really much space for walks here as Pylos is rich in greenery and it looks more like a big park rather than a modern resort.
The starting point of many sightseeing tours around the city is the Three Admirals' Square that remains one of the busiest places in Pylos. The main decoration of the square is a monument dedicated to the three admirals who participated in the legendary Battle of Navarino. Another interesting attraction is a huge plane tree located on the square. Planted here back in 1880, today it is striking in its size. The historic square is surrounded by many shops and restaurants.
Visitors to the city will have the opportunity to stroll through the unique archaeological site called Ancient Pylos. In this area, researchers have discovered the ruins of unique ancient buildings, the most splendid of which was the Palace of Nestor. This Mycenaean palace was partially restored by the researchers. During the years of existence, it was extremely large and had as many as 45 rooms. The famous archaeological area also has an interesting museum where you can see unique archaeological finds.
Pylos and its surroundings are not lacking in natural attractions. Nestor's Cave tours are particularly popular. This wonderful ancient cave is shrouded in many amazing legends. According to one of them, this is the very cave where Hermes hid 50 cows stolen from Apollo by a trick. Once inside the cave, you realize that this story is a pure myth since the cave is quite modest in size. Nevertheless, the cave is of great research interest due to many prehistoric finds discovered here.
An ideal place for a night walk would be Pylos waterfront. When the sun goes down it turns into one of the most romantic places in the city. Here you can just walk, admiring the panoramic view of the coast, or dine at one of the local restaurants. In the daytime, there are always a lot of tourists here. Nearby is a popular beach where tourists are offered fascinating sea tours.
Pylos is of great interest to divers. The thing is that in the immediate vicinity of its coast there are several ships sunk during the war. Flooded in 1827 during the Battle of Navarino, today they are popular underwater sights.
