Lipari Lipari has a rich history. It is assumed that the first settlers arrived here in the fifth Millennium BC. Later, the island was inhabited by Greek colonists and became the way station of Carthaginians during the Punic wars. Finally, Lipari was conquered by the Roman Empire. Lipari Island became an eparchy in the 3rd century. The relics of Saint Bartholomew, one of the apostles, were kept there. They were moved to Benevento in the 9th century. It happened because Lipari was attacked by Arabs. The island was ruled by so many dynasties, they are Normans, Hohenstaufen, Angevin, Aragon and Anjou. Every leader tried to leave buildings in memory of him to show his power. Unfortunately, many local buildings haven’t preserved to our times.
Some of the locals still believe that the relics of the Saint are still under the St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral. It is known that the cathedral was built on the foundation of the ancient sanctuary of Normans. We can’t know for sure, whether it is true or not, but there is a legend, that the relics are still on the island.
