Historians still haven’t reached an agreement regarding the foundation date of Porto Cervo. According to the information provided by local people, there was a small village on the site of the modern resort. Local people were mostly fishermen. The settlement consisted of only several houses. Almost no one knew about this settlement until Lebanese Prince Karim Aga Khan had to stop near the coast of Porto Cervo because his yacht needed repairing. This event happened in 1961. The prince and his crew reached the village in order to find help. When walking among the houses, the prince was so impressed by the natural beauty of this place that he decided to buy this land.
Porto Cervo is well-known for its exquisite beaches. The coastal water has an amazing emerald shade that shines brightly in the sunrays. Liscia RujaBeach is one of the most popular choices when it comes to sunbathing and swimming in Porto Cervo. This is the longest beach on the southern side of Costa Smeralda. When visiting this tranquil place, it is so easy to forget about everything and indulge oneself in the atmosphere of serenity and peace. The beach is covered with white sand that looks like sugar powder. This is a true paradise place with the ever calm sea. The water is shallow near the coast, so parents with small children will find it very comfortable to spend their free time here.
Romazzino Beach is another coastal area perfectly suitable for trouble-free recreation. This beach is located in a bay, and so it is safely protected from the strong winds. A calm and peaceful atmosphere reigns in Romazzino. The local hotel has swimming pools, playgrounds, and regularly organizes different entertaining activities for children. Are you in the mood for water-based entertainment? In Romazzino, vacationers are welcome to try scuba diving and explore the diverse underwater world of the region or take a mesmerizing canoe ride. Church Stella Maris is, perhaps, the most unusual building in Porto Cervo. The shrine is a white building, the design of which is reminiscent of the works of the famous architect Gaudi. The church has an original rounded shape that looks very elegant. The name of the church – Stella Maris – can be translated as “the sea star”. The construction of the religious landmark started in 1968 and lasted almost twelve months. The designers took into consideration absolutely all rules of the Mediterranean architectural style. Church Stella Maris was consecrated in 1969.
Nowadays, all guests of the resort are welcome to attend this spectacular white building with rounded elements. Forged iron treillage and red-tiled roof decorate the unusual building. There are two sculptures near the entrance to the church. These are the sculptures of Saint Josef and Pope John Paul II. The church exhibits a famous painting by El Greco, and the bronze doors feature an image of the Annunciation. A Neapolitan pipe organ is the main treasure in Church Stella Maris. When tourists approach the building, they see white pigeons that live here and meet guests like bringers of the good tidings.
It is impossible to reach Porto Cervo by airplane. Initially, tourists need to get to one of the nearby cities, for example, to Olbia. The distance from Olbia to Porto Cervo is only twenty-three kilometers. There is an affordable way to reach Porto Cervo – by bus. There is one bus a day to the resort. As a rule, vacationers rent cars or reach the resort in their yachts. This is understandable because most guests are rich and famous. Finally, tourists can order a taxi transfer from Olbia airport to Porto Cervo. The ride will be only half an hour.
