When in the beginning of the 19th century the actively expanding port area went beyond the existing fortress walls, Prince Leopold II ordered the surroundings of the new district to be an additional wall. Fans of unusual excursions will be offered a trip to the miniature Island Meloria. The main and only attraction of this Island is the old lighthouse tower. This bulk islet is divided with the coast of Livorno, by about 7 kilometers. In 1709 it was decided to build a new lighthouse, which later became an indispensable guide for seafarers. The ancient tower is perfectly preserved, despite the fact that it has undergone many battles and thousands of strokes of the waves during the storm.
