mare cielo & sport The city of Bari has gained international fame for one religious holiday that is celebrated every year and attracts a huge number of pilgrims from around the world. This is the famous Fiesta of St. Nicholas, which is celebrated during three days - from 7th to 9th of May. The date of the holiday is chosen not by chance. During these days was held a transfer of the holy relics of St. Nicholas to the basilica. The grand celebration starts at the gates of the Basilica of St. Nicholas. A beautiful statue of the patron of the city is carried away from the church and is taken through the main streets of the city. The festive procession usually attracts thousands of residents and tourists. During a year every visitor of basilica can also bow to the holy relics and leave a little note with a cherished wish next to the statue.

According to one of the ancient traditions, the statue of the patron saint of the city is transferred to a boat. The boat with the statue makes a ride, and when the boat with the priceless religious relic returns back to the port, the locals greet it with joyful shouts and songs. After this a large procession escorts the statue back to the basilica. After such solemn procession all holiday celebrations in Bari are considered officially open. Here tourists and the locals can enjoy fairs, music concerts, theatrical performances and various colorful parades. The festive events last for three days. On May 9, when night falls to the city, all residents and tourists gather on the main square of the city and enjoy colorful fireworks.
The gathering of the sacred "Manna" is also considered one more important event of the holiday. The manna is poured into tiny vials and is sent to various religious communities and churches. A part of the manna is mixed with water and is distributed in small vials - the sacred fluid can be purchased by anyone. Religious people believe that a bottle of the ointment is the best talisman against misfortune, and the sacred fluid can cure any disease. Small bottles of the holy water are sold not only during the time of the celebration; you can buy them at any time of a year – the liquid is known as one of the most popular souvenirs. Fiesta of Saint Nicholas is one of the most significant religious events in the world. Every year the festival attracts more and more visitors from different parts of the planet. Bari's residents are kind-hearted and open. For their qualities, they received the nickname of "Terroni" literally translating as "people of the earth". The locals do not take offense, but rather poke fun at this because only people with an exceptional sense of humor can laugh at themselves. Another feature of local residents is a very respectful attitude to parents, especially to mothers. In general, the Italians are known for their quivering attitude towards women, and Bari is surely not an exception in this case.
Bari(IMG_1365) Bari's people are very friendly and seem to love the whole world around. They are ready to help a person by any means, even if they don't have a dime to their names, and will try to make every effort to earn money just to help the one who needs this help. In addition to respectful attitude to parents, local people are famous for their ability to love children like no one else. Not only parents but all the relatives cherish small citizens. They are always praised for good deeds, clearly and concretely, but also blamed for doing bad things. That's why so many peace-loving and kind-hearted Italians grow up here.

In late April, the so-called "Tarallucci Fiesta" (Taralli Festival) takes place. The venue is a city located near Bari - Alberobello. The fair, tasting the "heroes of the occasion" - the very same tarallucci crackers, - as well as other products (particularly wine), fun, joy - all this can be seen here at the festival. One of the oldest carnivals takes place in Putignano just before the onset of the Christian Lent. Like in many other carnivals, its symbol is also a jester- Farinella of Putignano. The event is accompanied by theatrical performances, and the end of the festival is symbolized by throwing ashes out of the city cathedral's tower when the bell is ringing as many times as many days in the year.
In Acquaviva delle Fonti, a small town near the capital of Apulia, two more festivals dedicated to local cuisine are held. The first one, Red Onion Festival, takes place in mid-July. During this time, visitors are offered dishes containing the "heroes of the celebration" - this is pizza, pasta, and focaccia. The second festival held in the region is fully dedicated to Calzone pizza, which is originally prepared in the region of Apulia like nowhere else. Besides Calzone, there is an opportunity to try other dishes, although the main attention is usually paid to the main specialty. In addition, dance and music performances, as well as wine tastings, are prepared for visitors.

Christmas and New Year in Bari is certainly the time of miracles. During this period, all windows in the city are usually decorated with the so-called Il presepe - scenes representing the birth of Jesus. Every detail is thought out so that everything looks perfect. Presepe presented on Orso Hill is a colossal 2-kilometer-long structure. During Christmas in the capital of Puglia, local residents do not become more responsive, since good nature is inherent in them since birth. Everything happens as usual - they wish all the best, visit their relatives and friends. And only presepe and Christmas fair remind us that it is magical Christmas time.
