The city of Bari has gained international fame for one religious holiday that is celebrated every year and attracts a huge number of pilgrims from around the world. This is the famous Fiesta of St. Nicholas, which is celebrated during three days - from 7th to 9th of May. The date of the holiday is chosen not by chance. During these days was held a transfer of the holy relics of St. Nicholas to the basilica. The grand celebration starts at the gates of the Basilica of St. Nicholas. A beautiful statue of the patron of the city is carried away from the church and is taken through the main streets of the city. The festive procession usually attracts thousands of residents and tourists. During a year every visitor of basilica can also bow to the holy relics and leave a little note with a cherished wish next to the statue.
According to one of the ancient traditions, the statue of the patron saint of the city is transferred to a boat. The boat with the statue makes a ride, and when the boat with the priceless religious relic returns back to the port, the locals greet it with joyful shouts and songs. After this a large procession escorts the statue back to the basilica. After such solemn procession all holiday celebrations in Bari are considered officially open. Here tourists and the locals can enjoy fairs, music concerts, theatrical performances and various colorful parades. The festive events last for three days. On May 9, when night falls to the city, all residents and tourists gather on the main square of the city and enjoy colorful fireworks.
