Culture of Agropoli. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

One of the main symbols of the city is an ancient fortress dating back to the 15th century. Although the first defensive structures were erected on its site in the 6th century, the fortress has been perfectly preserved to the present day and is the most important historic landmark of Agropoli. The powerful castle is of unusual triangular shape, once it was surrounded by a deep moat filled with water. The city has managed to preserve one more attraction from the Byzantine Empire times - the beautiful Church Of Saints Peter And Paul, the construction of which was completed in 593. In the 17th century, the beautiful church was the main seat of an archbishop.

A much more recent, but no less attractive religious monument is the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Anne erected in the late 16th century. Important local fortifications are the towers named after St. Francis and St. Mark. Interestingly, the latter is part of the city defensive system even today. Guests of the city should definitely walk along a picturesque port area. The City Wall that had repeatedly protected the city from pirates and invaders in the Middle Ages stretches along the beautiful promenade. Many picturesque streets begin in this place, a walk along which would also give great pleasure.
Speaking about Agropoli's sights, it is also necessary to mention its wonderful nature. The amazing marine parks of Infreschi and Santa Maria Castellabate attract thousands of outdoor enthusiasts every year. During a walk through picturesque places, you can see beautiful caves, marvelously beautiful lavender groves, as well as rare plant species and typical inhabitants of these areas - martens, boar, partridges, foxes and golden eagles. The national parks have their own historic sites - medieval towers and ruins of fortifications. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

Among the museums that deserve a visit, first of all, we have to point out the Palazzo Civico delle Arti which possesses a beautiful collection of art works. The exhibition can be visited absolutely free of charge, and among the displays you can see both works of fine art and sculptures. There are also archaeological finds here. In Museo Acropolis, Fondazione G.B. Vico you can take a look at interesting furniture, vases, paintings of the 18th century. A separate gallery is dedicated to the works of the world-famous Giovanni di Paolo di Grazi. For those who are passionate about archeology, it is advisable to visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Paestum, where there are a lot of well-preserved monuments.
The Chiesa della Madonna di Costantinopoli church is interesting not only from an architectural point of view – it also has a wonderful panoramic view of the city and the quay. The shrine is dedicated to Madonna, who, according to legend, appeared here several times. It always happened on the 24th of July and the first time it did was in the year 1535. The church, though small, is worth seeing, at least because it gives an inspiring feeling when it is visited – pacification to be exact. Parrocchia Santa Maria delle Grazie stands on a historic site – the fact is that a Saracen camp was once located here. The church itself was built at the beginning of the 20th century; hence it has a modern look.

Fans of archeology will be delighted by an opportunity to pay a visit to the magnificent ruins of Templi Greci di Paestum. This is a huge complex, which includes the temples of Athena, Poseidon, Hera, an amphitheater, Porta Giustizia. The already mentioned Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Paestum is also located here. It will seem to any visitor as though time was turning back, and ancient Greeks dressed in togas were going to emerge from the ruins. Concerts are held here in the evenings, and the temples in the complex are beautifully illuminated, evoking a sense of romance. This is also a great place for leisurely walks.
agropoli Another beautiful historical place is Punta Tresino. These are the ruins of village settlements, which will be very pleasant to walk around. Those who are fond of archeology and history will enjoy such a vacation. In addition, you can get wonderful views of the Cilento coast from here. However, it is just like the Punta Fortino, from where you can look at the sun-drenched Agropoli, which at this time discloses its “soul”. At the foot of the Castello Angioino Aragonese castle (which in itself is a great place to visit) is the observation deck Belvedere di via C. Rossi. It offers panoramic views of the beaches with watchtowers.
Borgo Medievale di Agropoli is a kind of small Old Town, a cozy and quiet spot of antiquity. Entrance to this place is free of charge. On the left side there is a port, and on the right you can see beautiful panoramic views of the bay. This is where Chiesa della Madonna di Costantinopoli and Castello Angioino Aragonese are located. Among other attractions you will find here is Porta Monumentale. Another interesting landmark is Gli Scaloni, a staircase which seems to lead to the sky. From here you have a fantastic panoramic view of the harbor of Agropoli.
