El Escorial Monastery

El Escorial Monastery is a famous Spanish residence of King Philipp II. The monastery is located near Madrid in a picturesque mountain area Sierra de Guadarrama. Philipp II ordered to build this magnificent monastery in 1557. In the middle of the military campaign, the king’s army has destroyed the old monastery named after Saint Lavrenty. This man was born in Spain that’s why the king decided to build a great monastery after the saint’s return to the motherland.

Originally it was built to ensure that the part of the large building could be used as a royal residence. This large construction of the 1584 year reminds a severe medieval fortress. It adores with the area – the monastery length is 206 meters and width 161 meters.

Almendra Dam

Almendra Dam is located near the so-named Spanish village. Its height is about 200 meters. The dam has an artificial lake with area of 90 square meters. Its length is quite big – 567 meters. The dam has been built for 6 years from 1964 until 1970. The second name of this arch dam is "Villarino". Since the building the dam became a part of the huge water power system Duero Drops.

For about 50 years Almendra Dam is one of the hugest in Spain, today it is connected with the Villarino Power Station. The construction of the dam is quite complex. At first there was build a 14 meters long underground tunnel that was designed to electricity output. It is quite interesting that after the water removing water goes to another river – Douro.
