Starting from its completion, the cathedral has almost not changed its look. It still has the original artistic décor. You will be able to admire intricate drawings and colorful stained-glass windows. Cattedrale di Santa Maria exhibits many precious religious artifacts. Inside the cathedral, there is a mausoleum of a noble duke who lived here in the 16th century. The cathedral is also famous for its tall bell tower that is visible from many streets of the town.
Proceed to the old chapel that is situated not far from the cathedral. Several years ago, Museo Diocesano opened in this building. The chapel was abandoned and was slowly deteriorating for many years until it was decided to turn it into an interesting museum after a thorough restoration. Chiesa di San Francesco is an interesting attraction that is also worth exploring. This church is a part of an old monastery that was built here yet in the 14th century. The monastery became abandoned over years and slowly deteriorated. The church is the only surviving element of the once majestic monastery complex. Chiesa di San Francesco suffered much damage during an earthquake at the end of the 16th century but local people carefully restored it. Today, the gorgeous dome is one of the main decorations of the fabulous church. It is also interesting to visit this church to see a collection of religious artifacts.
The Jesuit church of Chiesa di San Michele remains one of the most widely recognized attractions of Alghero. This church got its name after the town’s patron saint. The church was built in the 17th century. It has one distinctive feature – a colorful dome decorated with tiles of different colors. You can see this church on postcards and various souvenirs in Alghero. This is also one of the most frequently photographed attractions at the resort.

There are several interesting archaeological sites in the vicinity of the town. Tourists can visit such regions as Palmavera and Sant’Imbenia that are available for excursions. These are ruins of Bronze Age Nuragic settlements. Ancient buildings made by indigenous people in the 15th to 8th centuries BC are the biggest treasure of these sites. Scientists think that no less than 150 huts were built here in total, but fragments of only 50 buildings have remained to this day.
The indigenous people used limestone and sandstone to build their houses. Besides fragments of ancient buildings, visitors can see elements of old walls and other constructions. There were large port towns here yet during the prehistoric era. During the excavations in the area, archaeologists found fine ceramics, amphorae, and bronze bars. Later, ancient Romans built many important constructions here, some fragments of which have survived to this day.
