The most popular beach of Patmos is Grigos. The sea in this area is always calm, so the conditions are ideal for scuba diving. Other two popular beaches, Kambos and Diakofti, are located nearby. Their length is slightly smaller comparing to the first one, but because of this fact they do not stop being comfortable and attractive.
On Patmos you will find numerous old buildings. St. John the Evangelist Monastery was built in 1088; nowadays the walls of the monastery keep the exhibition of a small museum. Here visitors can see ancient manuscripts and a collection of jewelry. The shrine is kept by 40 monks, which will happily tell the story of the monastery to their guests and will show all interesting rooms and cells. Near the monastery is located the cave named after John the Evangelist. According to a legend, in this cave the Apostle received the "Revelation". A church was built in this cave. The church is considered sacred and is included in the list of the world’s unique religious monuments. The monastic library, which exhibits over three thousand books, in another place worth visiting. One-third of all the books are manuscripts, many of which exist in a single copy only. The terrace of the library features a great view of the island and the coast.
Besides interesting sights Patmos is famous for its magnificent nature. Spacious beaches are followed by rocky cliffs and groves; here you can always enjoy the silence, which is violated only by birds singing. Near the beaches you can find small restaurants and retail shops – there are no large markets and shopping centers here.
