Three architectural attractions can be found already on Piazza Umberto. Those are the monastery of San Giacomo, the Clock tower and the Church of Santo Stefano. All religious buildings feature excellent exterior and original design of halls; they are true works of architectural art. The symbol of the island and its capital of the same name is the Phoenician Steps. Its length is slightly less than two kilometers. All those wishing to step the stairs from the beginning to the end will have to overcome 921 steps. This ancient staircase connects the capital of the island with Ankapri. It would take about half an hour to overcome the difficult path between towns. Archaeologists believe that the construction of stairs was built in the 7th century BC. The architectural complex has been completely renovated and restored in 1998.
In the middle of the last century, archaeologists have discovered the ruins of Villa Damekuta. The age of this architectural complex is about two thousand years. Nearby there are ruins of a medieval tower built in the 12-14th centuries. Among natural attractions Blue Grotto is noteworthy; this is a unique cave that is lit inside with a unique blue light. Boat tours are arranged there, during which you can see the grotto in all its glory. Copyright www.orangesmile.com
