Sightseeing in Amalfi - what to see. Complete travel guide

Mediterranean Italy offers all tourists in search of beautiful places to visit Amalfi that is an incredibly charming and gorgeous vacation destination. In recent years, Amalfi has become a true tourist mecca. This paradise on earth attracts cinema stars, famous politicians, and other celebrities. The striking beauty of local nature and a well-developed tourist infrastructure make Amalfi a paradise for vacationers.
According to the history of Italy in the 9th to 13th centuries, there were four republics in the country at that time, namely, Pisa, Genoa, Venice, and Amalfi. The governments of these republics were taking efforts in establishing strong trading relations with Europe and the East. Amalfi was one of the major cities on these trade routes. It became an independent region by the end of the 9th century. Local people had a unique talent – they could avoid wars and large conflicts and preferred to negotiate all problems with other regions and countries, strengthening their commercial ties.
However, the history of Amalfi had dark periods as well. In 1135, troops from Pisa completely destroyed the fleet of the Italian commercial city. Amalfi couldn’t protect itself from invaders who plundered the city. The once well-developed republic of Amalfi ceased to exist. However, the wheel of fortune brings not only disasters but also prosperity. Thanks to incredible beauty of this region, Amalfi survived and became a popular city again. Nowadays, this is a renowned and well-established tourist center in Italy. Copyright www.orangesmile.com
It is hard to put the beauty of Amalfi into words as it is much better to see this region with own eyes. Bays of miraculous beauty, majestic grottoes, and capes with spectacular views – you will see all these and more once you step onto the enchanting land of Amalfi. Local people are very hospitable and friendly with tourists. The city’s government invests money in the infrastructure of the city so that tourists who visit it are satisfied and wishing to visit the resort once again.
What should tourists see in Amalfi? Since ancient times, residents of Amalfi have been famous because of Bambagina, a special type of paper. This paper is well-known worldwide, but the process of making Bambagina is still a secret. A visit to the museums of paper will let you learn more about it and see old paper manufacture. At a glance, the whole process is quite primitive but, despite this, local paper was famous for its quality. In the museum, visitors can participate in interesting master classes and make paper themselves. There are still masters who professionally handle this job, and they gladly demonstrate their skills to guests of the city.
Are you interested in marine achievements of the region? Arsenale della Repubblica is the right place to visit then. This museum exhibits warships of local people that look like they have risen from ashes and ready to sail. The beautiful galleon is one of the most notable exhibits in the museum. This is a two-deck ship with a total of 100 oars. According to historical data, this warship could prevent the invasion of Saracens and defeat them while they were trying to destroy the vessel.
When making yourself familiar with landmarks of Amalfi, it would be a mistake to forget about the Civic Museum of Amalfi. Among numerous precious artifacts, this museum exhibits Tabula Amalphitana, the first codex of maritime laws in the city. This codex has 66 paragraphs that stipulate navigation rules and define rights and obligations of sailors. Archeologists found many interesting artifacts in local bays such as old navigation devices that Amalfian sailors used centuries ago. Nowadays, everyone is welcome to take a look at them.
The Cathedral (Duomo) is the main religious landmark in Amalfi. The shrine is situated in the central part of the city, on the square with the same name. You will see a spectacular building, the façade of which has stunning mosaic décor in the Byzantine style. Inside, the cathedral looks even more marvelous. Baroque elements add a touch of mystery and hidden elegance.
