Sightseeing in Atrani - what to see. Complete travel guide

In the region of Campania and the province of Salerno in west Italy, there is the charming and cozy town of Atrani. Thanks to its marvelous nature, Atrani is widely recognized as one of the cutest towns in Italy. Atrani is a small town, and its population density is lower than in other cities of the country. Frankly speaking, the population of Atrani is less than one thousand people. Its fantastic location among mountains attracts a large number of foreign guests every year. Tourists come here to not only admire sea views but also to breathe the fresh mountain air.
The exact establishment date and origins of Atrani are a mystery. One thing is clear – there were already villas of Roman nobles in this area in the 1st century. The Amalfi Coast was covered with gorgeous ancient buildings. When barbarians started to plunder this land repeatedly, Romans had to leave the area. First mentions of Atrani as a town for aristocrats appeared in the mail of Pope Gregory I in 596. At that time, this was a large settlement protected by a castle wall. Once, a giant tsunami washed several settlements off the land surface. Atrani also didn’t escape this sad fate. It had nothing left but to become a part of the Principality of Salerno.
Atrani suffered from a great problem in 1643. A devastating plague epidemic started in the region. Many people fell victim to this disease, and the population of the town decreased greatly. After that, a period of calmness and peace started in Atrani. When King Bonaparte visited the Amalfi Coast in summer 1807, Artani was a part of his journey. The beauty of the region impressed him so much that the king promised to make a road to the town so that more people could visit it and see the picturesque area with their own eyes. There are not that many attractions in this town, but there are still some places of interest that tourists should visit. Many of these sights have survived until modern days in their original look. The Collegiate Church of St. Mary Magdalene Penitent is the first place that tourists should move their feet to. The beautiful church dates back to the 13th century. This is a true pride of the Amalfi Coast.
The façade of the church has beautiful details in Baroque style. The cupola of the building is different from typical cupola construction types. It has a ceramic coating. The cupola is made from terra cotta with glazing and detailed drawings. The church is so unusual that its look won’t leave indifferent even tourists who are generally not interested in religious landmarks. There is an observation point in front of the church where tourists can admire a truly breathtaking view of the region.
The Church of San Salvatore de' Birecto is one more important landmark in Atrani. The fabulous church was built in 940. According to historical data, doges received their ducal hats in this church. These hats were symbols of power. After the ritual, the doge became the chief of the Italian town. When walking on the stairs to the church’s entrance, take a look at its design. Just like the church, the staircase is a beautiful piece of Baroque art. Step inside the church and look up at the ceiling to see the ancient artifacts that decorate the building.
Do you prefer to spend time in peace and silence? In this case, don’t forget to relax at the local beach. As the town is quite small and there are not many tourists, you can relax peacefully in this paradise on earth. The Mediterranean coast is especially beautiful and mesmerizing in this region. Atrani is a family-friendly town, so don’t forget to bring your loved ones here.
The sun sheds its warm light during the whole tourist season, and local coastal waters have a fantastic azure color. The sea is calm in Atrani, and high waves are rare in this region. That is why parents do not need to worry about the safety of their kids. Local authorities take care of the local beach – there is daily cleaning. To make beach recreation even more comfortable, local businesses offer lounge chairs and sun umbrellas for rent for a small fee.
There are no direct flights to Artani. Tourists need to fly to Naples first. The path from Naples to Atrani might look complex for beginners because this is a mountain area with serpentine roads. The bus to Salerno departs every thirty minutes from Naples Airport. After that, a bus to Amalfi will take you to your final destination. The Atrani stop is the last but one.
