Basilica di San Vitale There are a few peculiarities of the Italians’ mentality, which you have to consider if you decide to visit Emilia-Romagna. First of all, there is a totally special attitude towards the food. The eating process is a real ritual for the locals, which happens on a certain schedule. There is a coffee with pastries in the morning, and then a lunch with family, and in the evening they have a dinner at home or at a restaurant. Besides, it is better to share a meal. Then you can share your feelings about the food and make it even tastier. Any kind of fast food, food “on the go” – those are just forced actions for the Italians, which are required by the circumstances.

Such a relaxed attitude towards all around you is something to learn from them.

The Italians care a lot about their looks. They always dress for the occasion. Any self-respecting Italian will never go to a restaurant, wearing the same clothes he did, while walking in a park with his family. Do you see someone wearing shorts and a T-shirt in the historical part of a city? This is most likely a tourist. By the way, it is common here to be nice to people, whether you know them or not. Say hello to everyone at a supermarket, smile, and look in the eyes. If someone pushed you, apologize first. You will get a lot of compliments in return, and the incident will be over.
La Rocca Sforzesca di Imola (XIII secolo) Keep in mind, that usually you have to pay for your order at a café or a restaurant before you get it. It is also not common to touch fruit and vegetables with your bare hands at a supermarket. You should wear special gloves, which you will find in any shop. Don’t leave tips everywhere – you will give an impression of a person, who is wasting money. Remember, shops, museums, and restaurants may be closed even if according to the schedule they should be opened. Just deal with it. By the way, if you learn some Italian phrases, the locals will understand you better. Not everyone speaks English outside the touristic area, and not everybody wants to hear it.

Meeting with acquaintances, relatives or friends, they inevitably kiss twice on the cheeks. … Open
