Colors of La Palma - traditions, festivals, mentality and lifestyle

Fotos del crucero Oriana en el muelle de Santa Catalina de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria La Palma is considered one of the most colorful Canary Islands. Travelers are attracted here not only by wonderful beaches but also by its special authentic atmosphere. Despite the fact that more and more tourists visit the island every year, this does not really affect the lifestyle of local people. Most of the islanders are now engaged in the tourism sector but never forget about their traditional crafts, however. Like many years ago, hereditary fishermen live and work here today. Thanks to their work, the freshest seafood is served in local restaurants every day.
Interesting features can be seen literally at every step - even ordinary houses on the island are unique sites. Some of them are a few hundred years old, such durable houses were once built from fossilized lava without any additional binders. The thickness of the walls in the old buildings can reach 1 meter, it is surprising that even now people continue to live in such unusual houses. It is noteworthy that the petrified lava is now one of the main values of the island. It is forbidden to take small lava stones out of the island so buying souvenirs made of them would be the best solution.
Another interesting symbol of La Palma is the dragon trees, which can be called one of the wonders of the world. These trees are distinguished by a unique appearance and an impressive size, their age can exceed a thousand years. The main characteristic of the trees is their resin's rich red color. Many beautiful legends are associated with these trees. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

Locals believe that a big dragon once lived in these places. Its main victims were elephants that inhabited this land, but the biggest and strongest elephant has eventually managed to defeat the monster. When the dragon's blood spilled on the soil, the young trees soon appeared on it. It is believed that the real dragon blood is flowing through their trunks. The islanders ascribe a lot of amazing properties to the resin. The dragon trees' seeds are considered to be powerful amulets, very beautiful talismans and jewelry are made from them here.
La Palma is one of the few islands of the archipelago, which fully provides itself with fresh water. Several kilometer deep tunnels were drilled in the mountainous areas of the island for the extraction of water. The water tunnels have been used for many years and are now controlled by the so-called "water barons". The mines are private property, their owners are among the wealthiest people not only on the island but also in the entire archipelago.

Another important craft of La Palma is silk production. The local silk making traditions were first mentioned in the 16th century. Over hundreds of years, local craftsmen have achieved incredible heights in its production. Today, a large part of textile workshops is available for tours as well, but most tourists still limit themselves to visiting shops selling luxury silk products.

Cigars produced on the island make a worthy competition to the world famous Cuban cigars. If you visit one of the local factories, you can see how their workers roll cigars by hand using only the best tobacco.
Every year, the traditional Carnival of Los Indianos (Desfile de los Indianos) is held on the island. This holiday is considered to be one of the most significant in the calendar of local residents. Many years ago, when a crisis broke out in the Canary Islands, many of their residents moved to Cuba. Having made a fortune there, they decided to come back to their historical homeland. The beautiful carnival is dedicated to such an important historical event. Absolutely everyone can take part in solemn processions going through the city streets. Locals dress up in wealthy emigrants so elements of their costumes may seem quite unusual. Old suitcases, cages with exotic birds, banknotes sticking out of the hat — here everyone is trying to imitate a happy rich emigrant in all possible ways. The carnival is always accompanied by spectacular music and dance performances.
