Almost 100 Hotels by Marriott Will Open in Asia Pacific This Year
It looks like the coronavirus pandemic doesn’t prevent Marriott International from aggressive expansion in the Asia Pacific region. This year, the famous hotelier plans to open as many as one hundred hotels in this key region. The new hotels will operate under different brands, bringing the signature service and hospitality. The company celebrated an important milestone last year 800 hotels in the Asia Pacific portfolio. This became possible by opening 75 new hotels more than one Marriott hotel was opening in the region every week.
In 2020, the hotelier added another 27,000 rooms to its pipeline. As expected, Greater China is the leader in terms of the number of hotels. This year, Marriott plans to open its 400th hotel in the country. Marriott hotels in Shanghai are also expanding at a tremendous rate the JW Marriott Shanghai Fengxian, which is set to open in spring 2021, will be the 50th hotel by the company in this Chinese city.
Such attention to Greater China is easy to explain. This region is on its way to turning into the largest personal luxury market in the world in just 4 years. Even the pandemic couldn’t stop the luxury market which kept growing in 2020. Marriott plans to strengthen its positions on the market by opening new hotels in Xiamen, Changsha, Jiuzhaigou, and Quingdao. The soon-to-open Ritz-Carlton Reserve hotel in Jiuzhaigou will make China the first country in the Asia Pacific that has all luxury hotel brands by Marriott.
While hotels in most parts of the world are experiencing troubles today, Greater China can be a lifesaver as the demand for hotels is strong. For instance, Marriott hotels had their bookings up by 25% in Q3 2020 compared to Q3 2019. Once people became sure that the virus is under control, they resumed their traveling activities. To meet the growing demand, Marriott plans to open new properties in trendy destinations including hotels in Mianyang (Sichuan province) and Nanjing.
Some other notable openings in Asia Pacific also include a hotel in Osaka (Japan) and a hotel on Jeju Island in South Korea. To support the Michi-no-Eki sightseeing trail, Marriott will open six additional hotels in Japan along roadside stations, bringing the total number of Fairfield hotels in Japan to 30. Finally, the hotelier doesn’t forget about popular resorts and will open hotels in the Maldives and Goa later this year.
