The length of this picturesque island is just 19 kilometers. Its name can be literally translated as "grain". The town was founded by the Romans far back in the prehistoric times. The fertile soils of this region have become a real treasure for first settlers. In the 5th – 7th centuries Formentera was already widely known as an agricultural center; later large deposits of salt were discovered on the island. Several large plants appeared here. Close proximity to Ibiza has made this town the center of recreation and tourism. As opposed to the bustling and popular resort this place is relatively quiet. This has made it very popular among fans of diving, fishing and wildlife.
There are several hotels and resorts on the island. However, they are not able to accept all tourists, so many people prefer to live in hotels in Ibiza and come to Formentera to enjoy beach rest. Despite the fact that this town is very small, you will find here several attractions in addition to wonderful beaches. The central square is the location of the church built in the beginning of the 18th century. This church looks more like a sumptuous castle. You will also see cannons installed on its towers – many years ago they have protected the island from pirates.
In order to get acquainted with traditions and culture of local people, visit the ethnological museum that exhibits collections of national costumes, handicrafts and art objects. The majority of restaurants and taverns are located in the port area of the town, La Savina. You can also ride a ferry or a boat here, or rent a fishing boat. Due to the fact there are not many tourists on the island, the beaches and the sea here are very clean. This makes the resort even more attractive. If you want to make a break from the daily hustle and enjoy the splendor of nature, Formentera will be your ideal holiday destination.
