Calke Abbey
From the series “The Most Elegant Buildings of Baroque Architecture”
Calke Abbey has a quite outstanding history. It is a building of the 12th century Augustinian priory. Later the priory was closed under the order of Henry VIII. At the beginning of the 18th century, the building was fully rebuilt in the baroque style. The house was owned by the Harpur family for nearly 300 years until the last owner died. After 1985 the house came into possession of the government and became open for people.
Some rooms were left in the way that they were during at the Harpur family times. Today the old Abbey is a large architecture and park complex, visitors can walk in a great landscape park. The spacious area has also placed a small farm, that’s why the place is quite good for families.
