In general, the courses that you can taste in Brac are not much different from those in continental Croatia. The only thing: the variety of fish courses here is much bigger, and you can vouch for the freshness of seafood, especially in coastal restaurants. The choice of dishes at a restaurant, “restauracija” in Croatian, and in a konoba, the local analog of the tavern, usually furnished in the countryside style, is approximately the same. The locals love to have a proper lunch and dinner because in the morning they do not cook all the dishes in the taverns. Since most of the people here have a late breakfast, in most places you can see the dishes offered for marenda, the second breakfast, from 10.30 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. Usually, it's fish or meat, just a serving will be smaller than a standard one and cheaper.

People here prefer healthy, nutritious, and easy food. Near the coast of Brač, there are almost 350 species of edible marine inhabitants, and therefore the choice of seafood courses is truly enormous. The most popular dishes are a salad from octopuses or lobsters, stuffed calamari, baked and boiled sea bass fish, St. Peter, dorado, lionfish, flounder, and mullet. Most often, the waiter tells you what kind of fish is available and brings a few species on the tray to choose one. Note that here the price is often indicated by weight, and therefore the specific fish will be cheaper or more expensive than indicated in the menu. From the seafood, they serve oysters, mussels, moray eels, calamari, and eels in a large assortment.

Try ispod peke, baked lamb. Meat is cut into cubes, pressed with a metal lid and slowly baked, pored over with the coals. Goulash from beef or pork is often served together with pasta, as well as a baked turkey. Do not go past a sausage called vitalac, made from lamb’s offal, and then grilled. Among the first course, it is worth trying the soup-ragout brodet, very popular among the locals. Previously it was cooked exclusively by the poor, now you can order this dish in any self-respecting restaurant. Fish and seafood are stewed in an open container, adding vegetables and spices until almost all water is evaporated. It is usually served with polenta. Another original local dish is black rizhot. The dish is similar in composition to the Italian risotto with the addition of cuttlefish ink, which makes it really black. Also try dried cod-bakalar, which is usually served on holidays but you can find it on the menu of almost all the restaurants on weekdays as well.

If you want to drink coffee in the morning, then you need to look for cafes or cafeterias. They usually open around six in the morning. If you do not specify which coffee you want, then by default they will bring you a black espresso. In kava sa mljekom there will be milk, in kava sa šlagom – cream, and in bjela kava – whipped cream. Usually coffee is served with a glass of water. Tea is also popular, most often it is herbal or floral infusion. Therefore, if you want to taste a traditional drink, then order Indian tea. Freshly prepared lemonade is also popular, and sugar to it is served separately.

The best beers here are Karlovačko and Ožujsko. When buying in a store, note that the price is indicated without the cost of the container. The thing is, it is customary here to bring back an empty container in exchange for a new one and not pay extra at the checkout, otherwise the purchase price will be higher. Wine in Brac is very popular and there are many varieties of it. Semion, Malvazija, Kaštelet, Grk, Pošip – these are just a few interesting variations of this drink. Here, by the way, it is customary to dilute wine with mineral or soda and order a ham to go with it – prsut, sheep cheese or kulen, pork sausage. Stronger drinks are usually served as an aperitif, for example, pelinkovac, based on juniper, local cognac vinjak or maraskino – cherry liqueur.
