Massachusetts State House, Boston

» The Capitol is a huge building constructed in 1798. The city authorities meet here.
»  The land plot was provided by the first governor of the state. The building that has a total area of 27 000 m2 was built here.
»  Originally, the dome of the Capitol was made of wood and then it was covered with gold leaf. Its top is decorated with a cone. It symbolizes the significance of the lumber industry developed in the city in the colonial era.
»  The house was built of red brick. You need to go through the portico to enter it. It is upheld by white columns. The ceiling of the second floor depicts historical scenes. The main staircase leads to the inner rooms of the Doric Hall.
»  The massive door is open on festive occasions, for example, when the President visits the palace or on the last day of the governor’s rule. Traditionally, the political figure walks along the hall alone, so the tradition is called “Lonely Walk”.
»  The Massachusetts State House keeps a secret. In 1795, the box with “messages”, the time capsule, was left in one of the corner rocks. The metal box that weighs 5 kilos was opened in 2015. There were printed papers and coins.

Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston

» The Irish-American architect Patrick Kelly designed the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.
»  The construction lasted 9 years.
»  Originally, the Catholic Church was aimed at introducing as many parishioners, as possible to Catholicism. So, it was necessary to build the big house of worship. Catholic rites in all their glory and festive worships with chants and organ music were held here.
»  In December 1875, the construction was blessed by the first city archbishop.
»  The main material used during the construction of the New Gothic cathedral was special stone and gray limestone. It is 111 m long, 27 m wide, and 37 m high. It accommodates almost 2 000 people.
»  When Pope John Paul II visited America for the first time, he held a long worship service exactly here. The prayer in honor of those who died during the Boston Marathon terrorist attack in 2013 was held here too.
»  At the church, there are a high school and a college. The Cathedral of the Holy Cross is the most impressive religious institution in New England.

Park Street Church, Boston

» According to one of the versions, the religious construction gained such an unusual name, Park Street Church, due to the fact that there had been powder in its basement during the war in 1812.
»  Park Street Church was opened for parishioners. It welcomes up to 2 000 people every week.
»  The church is located in the city center. There had been a granary at one time.
»  The decision on its construction was made in May 1809. The first mass was held in January 1810.
»  The first sermons generated good income for the church. Sermons lasted about 3 hours. The parson was hired then. With a stick, he hit on the head of those who dared to nap during the service.
»  Park Street broadcast radio programs across the country. It also established special programs on prison education.
»  The historic building with a spire is 66 m high. The altar for the priest was placed in the center of the hall to emphasize the importance of sermons.
»  There is only one stained glass window (1904). It is situated in the part of the building that is not seen from the outside.
»  Traditionally, there is a city cemetery near the House of God. In the Old Granary Burial Ground, there are graves of heroes fighting for freedom in America.

Custom House, Boston

» The Custom House Tower is a building that belonged to the customs office. It was built in the 17th century.
»  In 1915, a clock tower was constructed near the skyscraper in the Greek style. The diameter of the clock is 7 m. It was impossible to see the exact time on the dial because the motor did not let the mechanism move in the right direction. The building is 151 m high. Its roof is supported by 36 corrugated columns. They are cast in solid granite pieces, each of which weighs 40 tons.
»  The dome of the skyscraper was constructed in a way that it transmits natural light.
»  It is warm in the building due to the heating device in the basement. Coal for it was brought from warehouses on the other end of the street through underground passages.
»  Later, the building was abandoned, as the customs service moved to another place. It had been empty for 14years.
»  The construction has belonged to the owner of the hotel complex since 1995. Today, it is called “Marriott's Custom House”.
»  In total, the hotel consists of 87 rooms. Artists painted 4-5 rooms on every floor. Everything is compact and functional here.
»  There is an observation platform in the form of the round balcony at the 26th level of the Marriott's Custom House Tower.

Bunker Hill Monument, Boston

» The monument to those who died during the Independence War (1775) was constructed in the city in 1843.
»  The granite obelisk is 67 m high. It is seen from afar because it is located on the Breed’s Hill. The long glacial hill has the shape of an ellipse.
»  Here, Americans and their English enemies came to close quarters but they had to back off. 440 people died in that battle.
»  There is a monument in the center of the fenced platform. You need to go up 294 steps to reach the foundation of the Bunker Hill.
»  Near it, there is the sculpture of the commander of insurgents. The monument is a historical construction in America.
»  If you drop in the single-storey Bunker Hill Museum designed in the Greek style, you can learn about those events thanks to its exhibits. Here, you can see the memorial plate in honor of persons killed in battle. There is also the monument to Dr. Joseph Warren, one of the insurgents.
»  The Park Department ensures the preservation of the monument. Rangers wearing outfits of that period can take you to a sightseeing tour.
»  The spiral staircase leads to the observation platform that accommodates a small number of people.

Church of the Covenant, Boston

Facts: » The Latin word “convenire” means “to agree”. This was the name of the cult religious group of Protestants from Scotland. In 1586, they teamed up to protect their belief from attacks.
»  Congregational community of the city still exists as an autonomous church. The Church of the Covenant, or Central Church, is one of the historical places in America and an architectural monument of the last century.
»  The Church of the Covenant is a Gothic building. It was designed by a famous architect in 1867.
»  According to his plan, the house should be seen from any place of the district due to its height. The building is 73 m high.
»  It was constructed at the expense of rich industrialists.
»  The church has a bell tower. There is an elegant spire on it.
»  The windows for the church were made by Tiffany Glass and Decorating Co. Stained glass windows depict religious and philosophical scenes, which matches the building. As the texture of these paintings is complex, the windows do not give much light. However, the paintings look more voluminous and look like picturesque canvasses.
