Travel Guide to Velika Gorica, Croatia

Velika Gorica was founded in 1278. This is a small cozy town with interesting history. It is rich in sights and cultural values. During the times of Independence war the city has been severely damaged and many buildings and monuments have been destroyed. Today several monuments remind of those tough times and the city tries to remember any evidence of its rich history.
Large number of various exhibition halls and libraries is one of the most significant peculiarities of Gorica. The citizens of this city have traditionally had much interest towards reading. The oldest library here was founded yet in 1886. The collection of the library is so big that in 1999 it had to add one more building to store the growing number of books. Today the books are kept in two buildings and the citizens of Gorica keep reading their favorite books just as hundreds of years ago. One more famous object in the town is Turopolje Museum that was opened in the building of the former city hall. The house was built in 1765. At that time the first floor of the building was used as a prison and the second floor was devoted to assemblies. In 1960 the two-floor building was turned into a museum that stores a large collection of cultural, archeological and historical artifacts. Moreover, the museum has been chosen the place to store a collection of photographs that includes over 10 thousands of photos featuring the history of Velika Gorica.
