Leicester is a city in England that is also the administrative center of Leicestershire. The city was founded approximately two thousands of years ago on the former Celtic settlement. At that time the ancient Romans started building first protective facilities that later have been turned into the town. The history of Leicester wasn’t easy as it was ambushed by the Dutch. However, already in XI century the town was inserted into the English list of town “The Book of the Doomsday”.
During the medieval period Leicester was an active center of trading. Many industries started their developing from this place. During XVII-XIX centuries railway was building in Leicester; it turned the town into the important transport crossing. Even now it’s easy to reach numerous parts of the earldom and whole country from the city. Good transport system helped to speed up the development of industries, making many people move to Leicester to get jobs. Because of this the city quickly grew in size and numerous small villages were added to its territory.
Nowadays Leicester is a typical English city with an old center full of buildings made in the Victorian style and a new city with modern quarters located closer to suburbs. The historic part of the city features numerous beautiful buildings of XVIII-XIX centuries. They include the city’s municipality The Guildhall, Maria de Castro Church, the first hotel of Leicester The City Rooms, Leicester Abbey and a palace, and some other buildings. In this city you can also see the ruins of the Roman baths, Jew wall and Clock Tower (it is famous because on the territory of the tower cross 5 roads).
Tourists, who visit Leicester, usually visit the Botanic Garden, Abbey Gardens, Victoria Garden, trading centers, sports clubs, and a stadium. The majority of the population of Leicester is Asians, so in this city you can see an Islamic Mosque, Jainism center, Hinduism temple and a synagogue.
