In ancient times, city inhabitants built a deep well, at the bottom of which they were escaping from the exausting heat. It is to the bottom of this well that the legendary Abaneri staircase leads. Like many centuries ago, today the bottom of the well is filled with water. A hundred years ago, everyone could bathe in the well, but today the historic landmark is open exclusively to pilgrims who are allowed to wash their feet in the well.
