It is not clearly known when the first settlement on the site of modern Agra appeared. The earliest sources date back to the 11th century and mention the assault on the fortress of Agra. Everything changed at the beginning of the 16th century. Sultan Sikandar Lodi conquered the area and made the order to establish a new city, Agra. He made Agra the capital instead of Delhi in 1504. The year 1526 was very important for the city as it became the capital of a giant empire. After that event, several emperors claimed the throne.
Each of these emperors made something to develop the region, so Agra became an important and powerful city in the middle of the 17th century. This is the time when the internationally acclaimed Taj Mahal and Agra Fort were built. They still remain the main landmarks of the old city. However, the period of decline was already soon to begin. Emperor Aurangzeb decided to move the capital to another city, Aurangabad. Starting from this moment, the importance of Agra decreased. The city’s economy was in decline and its army became weak. This fact made Agra an easy target for troops of the Jat Kingdom and Marathas. In the 19th century, the British took over the leadership in the region. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

You can endlessly walk along the mosque and admire its elegant decoration. There you can see artful mosaic walls, bulks of precious and semi-precious stones, and amazing ornaments of marble. For hundreds of years, the mausoleum was partially looted, so now its entrance is decorated with doors made of copper instead of pristine silver. The rich decoration of gold and silver also thinned out, but it doesn't diminish interest in the outstanding attraction. Each year, Taj Mahal is visited by 3 million to 5 million travelers, among which a significant part is represented by residents of India. … Read further
