Chicago Spire, USA

From series “Famous unfinished buildings ”
Year: 2008.

The Chicago Spire skyscraper occupies a special place among the attractions of Chicago. Its construction had to be suspended due to the global crisis in 2008. Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava became the author of the project of an ultra-high skyscraper. According to his project, the final height of the skyscraper was to be 609.6 meters. It was planned to equip 150 floors in it. Chicago Spire was supposed to be the tallest skyscraper in the Western hemisphere after the completion of construction.

Series of disputes and disagreements both in the circles of architects and in the circles of the city authorities preceded the start of construction work. Many believed that such a high skyscraper would certainly attract terrorists. Therefore, the project of the building was changed several times. Construction work began in the summer of 2007. But it had to be stopped in January 2008.

Only the foundation was laid for the skyscraper. Therefore, it is possible to estimate its greatness only by the available computer models today. The construction project is managed by Shelbourne Development today. The company plans to implement it in full compliance with the original one. Externally, the high-rise building will resemble a huge drill. It will be aimed upwards for more than 600 meters. Its total area is estimated at 915,000 square meters. All this space is planned to be given for the arrangement of residential premises. It is planned to equip about 1,300 apartments in the skyscraper. Their minimum cost will be 5 million US dollars. Grant Park became a regular venue for another famous festival, Chicago Blues, which is traditionally held in May. The cultural calendar of Chicago isn’t limited to music events only; in mid-May the city hosts the Art Festival. This annual celebration is attended by about three thousand contemporary painters, sculptors and painters representing their best works to the audience. Interesting exhibitions and lectures, as well as fairs, where you can buy the most interesting and beautiful items, are held during the festival.

It is very interesting to visit the city at the beginning of July, when locals celebrate one of the most beloved national holidays, the Independence Day. All year long they prepare for the event, and then, for 10 days, Chicago shines with indescribable atmosphere of joy, fun and laughter. Ten-day holiday entertainment is very rich; every day of rest in this period would be unique and unforgettable. Chicago is home to many ethnic communities, and each of them has its own festival dedicated to the national culture. Celtic Festival, the Festival of African-American Culture and the Bud Billiken Day Parade are considered the most outstanding.
