New Zealand Parliament Building, New Zealand

From series “Famous unfinished buildings ”
Year: 1914.

You can see the Parliament Building in Wellington. It is one of the most amazing public buildings in the world. It began to be built in 1914. No construction work has been carried out since 1995. The building is officially considered unfinished. The building is quite large. It covers an area of about 4.5 hectares. The very first Parliament house was built on this site in the 19th century. It was built entirely of wood.

New Zealand Parliament Building, New Zealand A large fire destroyed the building in 1907. It was decided to build a more reliable stone building in its place after that. A large competition preceded the start of construction. More than 30 of the best architects took part in it. The project of the building proposed by John Campbell was the winner. The First World War greatly hindered the implementation of the project. New Zealand experienced a serious lack of funding during this period.

The Parliament Building is distinguished not only by its impressive exterior but also by the luxurious interior decoration today. Exclusive green carpets and original upholstered furniture were used to decorate the halls and corridors. The beautiful finish is made of rare wood. The library is considered the most unusual part of the building. It is the only remaining part of the old building. The library was built in 1899. It was built of stone, unlike other parts of the wooden building. This allowed the library to survive the fire. Interesting excursions are held in the building every day. Almost all of its halls are open to tourists. Next - Moscow Oceanarium
