The starting point of most sightseeing routes in Ostrava is its central square Masarykove. It is surrounded by a beautiful ensemble of historic buildings belonging to various periods. A column installed on the square was created in 1702 to mark the end of the plague epidemic. In medieval times, there were wooden residential houses on the site of the present main square. In the 19th century, it was decided to demolish them and build new stone and brick mansions instead. During that period, the area was significantly expanded and became one of the first in the city where street lamps were installed. The latter have survived hundreds years and are now a kind of city attraction themselves.

Near Masarykove Square is one of Ostrava's most beautiful architectural monuments - the Old Town Hall (Stará Radnice). The picturesque building with a beautiful tower was erected in 1539 and served its intended purpose until 1930. In the first half of the 20th century, the city got a new City Hall building so it was decided to open a museum in the old one. The last major reconstruction of the building was carried out in 1875. The latter has remained virtually unchanged since then. Currently, the entire building is put under the charge of the Ostrava Museum, which stores thousands of exhibits of various subjects. Several beautiful historic castles have been preserved In the immediate vicinity of Ostrava, and the most magnificent one is Zamek Kravare. It was erected in the 14th century and was originally a spectacular Gothic building.
