The starting point of most sightseeing routes in Ostrava is its central square Masarykove. It is surrounded by a beautiful ensemble of historic buildings belonging to various periods. In medieval times, there were wooden residential houses on the site of the present main square. In the 19th century, it was decided to demolish them and build new stone and brick mansions instead. During that period, the area was significantly expanded and became one of the first in the city where street lamps were installed. The latter have survived hundreds years and are now a kind of city attraction themselves.
Near Masarykove Square is one of Ostrava's most beautiful architectural monuments - the Old Town Hall (Stará Radnice). The picturesque building with a beautiful tower was erected in 1539 and served its intended purpose until 1930. In the first half of the 20th century, the city got a new City Hall building so it was decided to open a museum in the old one. The last major reconstruction of the building was carried out in 1875. The latter has remained virtually unchanged since then. Currently, the entire building is put under the charge of the Ostrava Museum, which stores thousands of exhibits of various subjects. The construction of this cathedral lasted six years and was fully completed in 1889. The main author of the architectural project was Gustav Marett.
