In the past, the territory of Marianske Lazne was a marshland. The first monastery opened here only at the end of the 90s of the 12th century – members of the Premyslid dynasty ordered to build it. Thanks to the hard work of monks, the abandoned swampy land turned into an attractive resort. Monks were the first people who discovered the first spring with saltwater. In 1606, doctor Slavkov visited the monastery for the first time to study the healing properties of the springs. This is when he prescribed the first water treatment course to his patient. After that, the news of the healing springs spread quickly to the nearby regions. Monks decided to turn the area into a resort.

During the reign of Maria Theresa, the resort changed its name to Marienbad. In 1779, monks tested water from the local springs and once again proved its healing power. This event marked the start of the resort’s development. Patients began to arrive in Marienbad to improve their health. Initially, they were living in wooden houses where they took mineral water baths. Marienbad officially received the resort status only in 1818. Resort buildings and comfortable pavilions started appearing in the town. When World War I ended, sanatoriums in Marianske Lazne reopened their doors for visitors. In Marianske Lazne, tourists can visit the Maxim Gorky Colonnade, an architectural complex dedicated to a famous writer. Gorky liked this resort town very much.
