The smallest town of Tuscany – Pienza – is one of the nicest in this area. Its population is not so big - just 2 000 people. Today it is quite hard to imagine that earlier on this territory was placed a small village. At the beginning of the 15th century Pius PP. II has rebuilt this village in a large town in Renaissance style. In 1459 the town has drastically changed.
Pius PP. II was born there and did his best for converting the village into a luxurious town. Pienza was the first European town which was built according to the accurate plan. Later all cities were built in such way. There were saved the Medieval buildings, today they are of a great value. In the centre of the historical area has placed a wonderful conciliar Church and several marvellous palaces.
The town isn’t only famous for the historical buildings but also there has placed a unique natural and cultural landscape Val d’Orcia. The main speciality of this area is the wonderful hills of right bell-mound. In summer they are covered with high green grass and wildflowers. Nice hills attract a lot of artists for hundreds of years. The best way to explore the city is on foot. Walking will open you a lot of secrets that are covered by the car travellers. During the walk around the square, you will see that the old buildings look different from various sides.
