Pitigliano, Italy

From series “The Most Inaccessible Buildings in the World”
Height: From 300 to 663 meters above sea level.

The ancient town of Pitigliano, situated in picturesque Tuscany, is probably the most impregnable settlement in the world. This ancient city was literally built on the rock. The stone buildings and the fortress walls form a whole with the rocks. According to the historical data the settlement was founded several centuries ago by Etruscans. They deliberately chose the high hill surrounded by three sides with the inaccessible rocks as a building site to protect themselves from the conquerors.

Pitigliano, Italy The old buildings, which can be seen today, are at the height of 300 to 663 meters above sea level. Many buildings and defense facilities have been preserved to the present. The curious town of Pitigliano has lived its own life for several centuries and is considered one of the most picturesque places in Tuscany. The tourists, who venture on the long way and climb up the high hill, have an excellent opportunity to walk through the wonderfully beautiful medieval streets and to see many unique sights.

Pitigliano is often referred to as 'Little Jerusalem'. Most of the modern city dwellers are Jews. One of the landmarks of the city is Orsini Palace, which was built in the 16th century and currently serves as the site of the archaeological museum. In many respects, thanks to its inaccessible position, the stand has retained its unique medieval form. There is no modern building on the territory of Pitiglianos. The walk through the old town will turn into a real journey back into the past. Next - Schloss Lichtenstein

Top destination around Pitigliano - Orvieto

Do you want to see how the main shrine in Orvieto looks like? There is a gorgeous cathedral in the city. This is a fabulous example of the Romanesque-Gothic architecture that can compete with many churches in the most famous Italian cities. When standing near the majestic cathedral, it feels like a giant is staring at you from above. The church is situated on a small square, which adds to an atmosphere of mystery and attractiveness. The central façade of the building is the first place that tourists should pay their attention at. This is a unique combination of different forms of art and skillfully made frescoes.

In the 12th century, there was another church on the site of the modern cathedral. However, that church was in drastic condition. The city’s authorities decided to build a new church on this site after a mysterious event had taken place here in 1263. When people took sacramental bread during ordinary public worship, the blood started pouring from it. Blood drops from the bread fell on the altar and people considered this an omen. The building of the main façade ended in 1310. The outer look is not the only attractive feature of the gorgeous cathedral. Come inside to see that the inner décor of the church is no less spectacular. The chapel with gorgeous frescoes and an image of Saint Brictius is a true gem of the cathedral.
