Alnwick Castle, England

From series “Amazing Ancient Fortresses Preserved to This Day”
Year: 11th century.

In the northern part of England, on the territory of the county of Northumberland is the castle Alnwick, whose age makes nearly 1,000 years. The castle, which was founded in the 11th century, now serves as a government residency. The exterior of the castle is simply irresistible. It is reminiscent of the majestic castles seen in modern films about the knights. From the Middle Ages to the present, the castle is the property of the Northumberland Duke and was recently opened for a free visit.

Alnwick Castle, England In some of the rooms of the residential castle the atmosphere of the past centuries reigned. It presents the collections of interesting historical artefacts and art objects. In the historical interior design of the castle one can also see 'the traces' of the modern people. In the old library, which preserves the huge collection of unique books, is the large television set. The Museum of Antiquity, which was opened in 1826, is probably the most interesting part of the castle. Among his exhibits there are the fragments of the Roman mosaic and the rock drawings discovered in the nearby caves as well as the interesting finds of the archaeologists.

Over the past few years, Alnwick has attracted more tourists than it did 10 years ago. One reason for this is his brilliant 'film career'. The unique castle served as a prototype of the fictitious Hogwarts Castle where the young spell was learning Harry Potter. Today, fans of the film come to the castle to stroll along the green meadows or to organize the picnic in the shade of hundred-year-old trees. In the summer many interesting attractions are offered in the garden near the castle. Next - Castle Woodstock

Top destination around Alnwick Castle - Newcastle

Fans of historical attractions have the opportunity to visit Hadrian's Wall. This is the name of partially preserved defensive structures erected in the days of the Roman Empire. The scale of this structure is really impressive: originally its length was about 120 km. The wall is named after Emperor Hadrian, and its extensive pieces have survived until the 18th century. Many parts of the defensive fortification were destroyed during the construction of roads in the 18th-19th centuries. Small fragments that have been preserved got the status of important historical sites.

An important local religious monument is the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas. The very first wooden church on its site was built in the 11th century, and in 1216 it was completely destroyed by fire. The new stone cathedral was erected here only by the middle of the 14th century. Like many years ago, today its important feature is a high openwork tower. Built in 1448, it has been served as a lighthouse for many years. Within the walls of the cathedral, you'll find many unique valuables, including ancient sculptures and decoration elements dating back several hundred years.
