Sage Gateshead, UK

From series “Glass Architecture - Impressive Villas and Buildings from Glass”
Sage Gateshead is a concert venue and also a centre for musical education, located in Gateshead on the south bank of the River Tyne, in North East England. Under the glass cupola, that resembles a twisted shell, has placed three large rooms. One of the rooms has seats for 1 700 people. The façade of the building is cladded with glassy tile. This building looks very outstanding in the beam of rising or hiding the sun.

Sage Gateshead, UK The inner decoration has a lot of interesting things. All halls have special dynamic panels on the walls. The ceiling panels may be raised and lowered and curtains drawn across the ribbed wooden side walls, changing the sound profile of the room to suit any type of music. That’s why musical events in “Sage Gateshead” are the most unusual. It is possible to see the building inside not only during the concerts. There was also opened several bars and restaurants, shops and even a library.

Sage Gateshead was developed by specialists from “Foster and Partners” company. Now their architectural masterpiece is called “giant caterpillar”. The wavy form of the building really resembles a large caterpillar. Like many other similar buildings, this building has a solid metal basis that holds hundreds of shining glass tiles. Tourists can see the marvellous building from the seashore. In warm period there are held boat trips and travellers can take a number of outstanding photos. Top destination around Sage Gateshead - Newcastle

An important local religious monument is the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas. The very first wooden church on its site was built in the 11th century, and in 1216 it was completely destroyed by fire. The new stone cathedral was erected here only by the middle of the 14th century. Like many years ago, today its important feature is a high openwork tower. Built in 1448, it has been served as a lighthouse for many years. Within the walls of the cathedral, you'll find many unique valuables, including ancient sculptures and decoration elements dating back several hundred years.

In the heart of Newcastle is the beautiful Cathedral Church of St. Mary, which is also of great interest from an architectural point of view. This is the highest church in the city. Its spire rises to a height of 70 meters. The church built in the middle of the 19th century is a vivid Neo-Gothic-style monument. During the Second World War, the church building was badly damaged, almost all of its unique stained-glass windows were destroyed. After the war, the original interior of the church was fully restored.
