Culture of Rotterdam. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

Delft Paysage Rotterdam can offer its guests widest choice of interesting excursions and entertainments. Many attractions are located in the port area. From an architectural point of view the so called Oude Haven houses are very interesting sights, which are great examples of Art Nouveau style. These fancy houses were built relatively not long ago - in 1984 - but already became an important object of almost every excursion in Rotterdam. Visitors are also recommended to visit Van Nellefabriek, an old tobacco factory the building of which was completed in 1931 and lasted six years. The beautiful historic building was completely reconstructed right after the closing of the factory. The reconstruction took place in the beginning of 90s.
One of the largest port cities in the world is ready to impress travelers not only with ultra-modern architecture, fast water taxis, and numerous markets. There are many interesting and … Open
Among the religious attractions of the city we should definitely mention the Grote of Sint Laurenskerk, near which is located the monument devoted to the famous Erasmus Roterodamus. The beautiful cathedral has miraculously survived during the years of World War II. Many historical places of interest can be found in the Delfshaven quarter. Tiny houses, beautiful squares and canals, windmills and ancient gardens – a walk in this part of the city will be a real journey into the past. Among the cultural institutions of the city we should definitely mention Prince Hendrik Museum, which is dedicated to the marine theme. The collection of ship models, antique maps, atlases and navigational devices includes numerous truly unique exhibits of the early 19th century.
The local Historical Museum is also the place where you can see numerous unique exhibits and learn interesting facts about the history of the city. Usually, acquaintance with the city of Rotterdam begins from Rotterdam Centraal Station, and therefore every tourist is immediately captivated on arrival. The fact is that the building can be recognized without exaggeration, as one of the masterpieces of architecture. The silhouette of the station can be immediately recognized in the midst of other buildings, as it is beautifully decorated and at the same time operational. This is definitely what a station of the future will look like – Rotterdam is not called the “city of the future” for nothing. Going a little farther from the station, you can find the Miniworld Rotterdam. This is an attraction-museum with a mini copy of Rotterdam. It is worth mentioning that here, even time runs its course.
Restauratie Rotterdamse Raadhuismaquettes / Restoration Rotterdam City Hall Models De Calypso, an elite residential complex, attracts people with its unique view. It is named so (De Calypso) not because the name was simply appealing, but because the building seems as though it is constantly in motion: the slanted bright panels of the facade gives the impression of perpetual motion, thus giving the building an original appearance. By the way, the building can be seen on your way out of the station, as it is located on Mauritsweg. Havensteder brightly stands out against the background of other buildings owing to its red color, which represents an interesting example of modern architecture. Another miracle of architectural thought is Erasmusbrug, which became one of the symbols of the city of the future. The structure is also worthy of at least a quick glance. Bridge, sea, ships, now what could be more romantic?

The majestic Witte Huis is another interesting building from an architectural point of view. However, almost every building in Rotterdam is worthy of this epithet. Nearby is situated the old harbor along which you can walk, as well as cubic houses, and the Market hall. This, as a matter of fact, is the first skyscraper in the capital of urbanism. It was built in the late 19th century, and is also one of the few buildings that survived the Second World War. For this exact reason, it certainly deserves a visit.
Kop van Zuid Rotterdam Among the religious monuments worth mentioning is Bergsingelkerk, attracting with its interesting appearance. The church was built in the beginning of 20th century. A very unusual church awaits those who decide to walk along the street of Mauritsweg. This is the Pauluskerk, which was built on the site of the old one in the year 2007. The building is a barely associated with a religious monument, and this is what is remarkable about it. Also in the city is an Orthodox church, known simply as Russisch Orthodoxe Kerk. It is located next to Erasmusbrug. The Kralingen neighborhood was not damaged by bombing during the Second World War, thus so many interesting monuments were preserved here. One of such monuments is a beautiful church called Hoflaankerk, built in 1842 by Arend Roodenburg.

Plan your own excursion through Rotterdam: churches, museums and castles

Euromast, Rotterdam

» The Euromast is a skyscraper in the form of the mast. The City Hall declared the competition of the construction of the extraordinary object. The Dutch architect won it.
»  The Euromast was built in 1960 in conjunction with the tenth international Floriade exhibition. The Euromast is 9 m.
»  The walls are about 30 cm thick. Its foundation is a solid block that weighs 1 900 tons. It makes such a thin construction more stable.
»  There are several institutions. The citizens set their hearts on the De Rottiserie restaurant that offers exquisite cuisine and luxury service. There is a cafe with affordable prices under the restaurant. Two hotel rooms are provided on special request.
»  There is a flat foundation in the form of the bridge at a height of 100 m. It is covered with a glass dome. Observation platforms have a view of the surroundings.
»  It was planned that the tower construction should have been 101 m high and ended with a platform. The citizens mocked at the construction and called it “crow’s home”. Later, the Cosmic Tower was constructed. The building is 85 m high. It is used for technical needs.
»  You can go upstairs to an observation transparent cabin through a floor hatch. It turns around its axis.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam

» The authorities established the cultural institution in 1847. It is aimed at seeking and buying artistic canvasses of global significance.
»  The museum was founded on the initiative of the lawyer Frans Jacob Otto Boijmans. However, the fire destroyed some exhibits. Only 127 items have left.
»  In 1958, the fund of the museum increased due to the presents from the ship industrialist Daniël George van Beuningen. He gifted 189 picturesque canvasses, 17 drawings, and 30 statues.
»  The museum bears the double name of its patrons.
»  The building of red brick was built by the project of the Dutch architect in 1935.
»  The museum houses 140 thousand paintings created from the 15th century to nowadays. Here, you can also see sculptures, sketches, and other items made by craftsmen of applied arts. Different engravings on metal are interesting too.
»  The museum was visited by members of royal families and political figures. Salvador Dali was satisfied with rare exhibits.
»  The construction is located in the center of the Garden of Sculptures. In the territory of the exhibition area, there are a library and a restoration zone. In the library, researches are carried out.

Erasmusbrug, Rotterdam

» The citizens have chosen the white overpass with an extraordinary configuration as their city symbol.
»  The Erasmusbrug was built in compliance with the most up-to-date technologies. The support was raised and symbolizes that The Erasmusbrug can’t be influenced by any aggressor.
»  The pylon has an irregular shape and is 139 m high. It is 802 m long.
»  There are no similar objects in the world.
»  The silhouette of the steel beauty resembles a feathered giant craning its neck when flying. As it looks like a bird, it is called the “Swan”.
»  The long surface is divided into several parts. The first sector of the bridge is suspended and fixed with cables. When the bridge is illuminated at night, stretched ropes resemble harp strings.
»  The next sector is drawing. Large ships float under it.
»  The passage is located in the Rotterdam port, near the harbor. The construction was completed in 1996. It was obvious that the project needed to be refined and updated.
»  In the viaduct of The Erasmusbrug, concerts, festivals, shows, and other events are held. In this district, there is the route of the international cycling race, The Tour de France.

Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk, Rotterdam

» The Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk is the only medieval monument in the city.
»  It started to be constructed in 1449. The construction lasted about a hundred years.
»  The church belonged to different confessions (Catholics and Protestants).
»  The building was damaged by the bomb. The authorities wanted to demolish it. However, the church was not dismantled but reconstructed thanks to the locals. The restoration lasted 16 years.
»  The Gothic exterior is deceptive. It does not match the interior, as there are a lot of contemporary decorative elements in St. Lawrence’s Church.
»  Designers created an art zone inside. In the hall, lights are always switched on. Spatial arrangements look strange. In the mirror, you can see the inscription “I will live”.
»  There is a cafe instead of traditional restaurants. You can have tea and talk about the divine purpose.
»  There is an exhibition in the added chapel. Its exhibits tell about the city development and the temple. In a particular sector, you can see pictures depicting world religions. These canvasses are not paintings but moving figures.
»  Besides religious services, you can visit an organ concert or other public events.

Pilgrim Church, Rotterdam

»  The House of God is located in the port. The house was built in 1417. The temple was Catholic and then Protestant.
»  There are not so many port churches in the world.
»  The Pilgrim Church is not luxurious and quite small. The bell tower was added. The walls are decorated with ornate pads. The front door is opposite the channel. The Pilgrim Fathers Church was visited by sailors, merchants, and travelers.
»  The interior is light and plain. It is decorated with arched white plastered doorways, vertical ledges, and columns. The interior is designed in the style of the 16th-18th centuries. Decorative wall panels are aged 450 years. On them, you can see the names of local bishops working here.
