Domus de Janas, Italy

From series “The Most Mysterious Constructions of the Planet”
Among the striking Italian buildings one must mention the so-called 'fairy houses' - Domus de Janas. These are the unique stone buildings whose outline reminds of the fairytale houses with doors and small windows. Most of these buildings were discovered in Sardinia. At the present time, there are about 2,800 buildings on the regional territory.

Domus de Janas, Italy Each cottage is peculiar. Some of them were cut out in the rock projections, and the others were cut out in the individual rolling blocks. One of the main features of the buildings is the relatively small size. Such a cottage should be about two times larger, so that man could live in it. This is the reason why Domus de Janas is held for the habitation of the magical beings - the fairies. Some people believe that the witches once lived in these tiny houses.

The houses carved in the stones are also remarkable for their interior design. On their walls you can see many mysterious symbols. According to the approximate accounts of the scholars, Domus de Janas were built in the period since 4th to 2nd millennium BC. With respect to the level of civilization at that time, one can imagine how complicated the construction process was. The travelers who visit this remarkable sight of Sardinia can make a magical ritual. In the middle of each cottage there are the little recesses, into which one presents the gifts for the fairies.
