Casu Marzu Cheese in Sassari Restaurants, Italy

From series “The Most Disgusting Dishes in the World”
Many fans of cheese head out to Italy in search of new taste sensations. So, it’s not surprising that in this country you can try one of the most horrible kinds of cheese, Casu Marzu. This cheese is produced in Sardinia. The name can be literally translated from the local dialect as a rotten cheese. This spicy variety became famous all around the world, because blocks of cheese are inhabited with hordes of insect larvae.

Casu Marzu Cheese in Sassari Restaurants, Italy Surprisingly, Casu Marzu is considered one of the most dangerous food for humans. Danger lurks not only for those who dare to taste worm-eaten cheese, but also those who just want to look at it. The size of the larvae, which live in the cheese, is about 8 mm, which does not prevent them to jump a distance of 15-20 cm. For this reason, it’s recommended to wear eye protection during visit to dairies. Those who still dare to eat a piece of cheese have to consider that it has a very pungent and even hot taste. Even such a small piece of cheese can cause a serious stomach problem.

Casu Marzu is made on basis of another famous cheese, pecorino. A cheese fly lays its larvae in a cheese block. After that, begins the process of decomposition. Within days, a hard cheese is turned into a paste. It can be eaten only as long as live larvae are seen in the paste. If not, it means that the cheese has decomposed to a toxic state and became a deadly poison. For a long time, Casu Marzu was officially banned for sale in Italy. Today, its production is permitted only in Sardinia, so you won’t be able to taste a delicacy in other regions of the country. Next - Sannakji Live Octopus in Seoul Restaurants
