Travel Guide to Villahermosa, Mexico

Villahermosa was founded in the end of the 16th century. This is a relatively small provincial town the main sight of which is La Venta National Park. Actually, the park is also the main reason why this place is widely visited by tourists from all over the world.
La Venta is the largest center of culture of ancient Olmecs. On the territory of the park are found over 170 monuments devoted to the theme of the universe. These monuments throw a light upon the views of the Olmecs concerning reincarnation. Olmec settlements existed on the territory of the modern national park in 1100-400 BC. Today four empty sarcophagi are the main proof of this ancient civilization. Archeologists found many precious artifacts in these tombs, especially in the first one that contained figures and jewelry made of nephritis. The sarcophagus’s cover was decorated with a drawing of a jaguar that is known as the symbolic guide of souls of dead people to the next world. Other 3 tombs also contained jewelry, but architects didn’t find any remains of human bodies.
If you want to know more about the history of the city, you should visit Museum of the History of Tabasco that exhibits several collections of historical values found mainly during excavations. Besides observing historical places of interest you can make a walk to Plaza de Armaz, around which are located picturesque parks, small shops and restaurants. People, who are keen on architecture sights, should consider attending an excursion to the local Cathedral – the biggest architectural sight of the city.
