A wonderful St. Basil Cathedral has placed at the Red Square in Moscow. It is one of the main religious and architectural landmarks of Russia. This splendid cathedral has been built for 6 years and the first believers visit it in the 1561 year. This cathedral commemorates the capture of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible troops. A great number of marches on Kazan were unsuccessful but in 1552 the tsar decided to take over the leadership of the troops and promised in case of a victory to build a marvellous church.
When Kazan was conquered Ivan the Terrible turned back to Moscow and ordered to start the building of a new stone church at the place of the old Trinity church. There was used the red brick, which until the middle of the 16th century, was a new building material. The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed has a number of unique peculiarities. It has an unusual architectural form. There is no clearly stated façade.
In 1561 this cathedral was the highest 65 meters peak of Moscow. Now there has placed a Historical museum that is visited by numerous tourists. Nevertheless that at the beginning of the 19th century the church was sacked by French soldiers, some original elements of the precious decoration were saved. There you can see a gorgeous iconostasis, gilded elements and renewed old frescos. The main decoration of the cathedral rooms is the wall oil paintings that were made during the reconstruction of the 19th century.
