The lake with the complicated name 'Gurudongmar' was named to honor the well-known Buddhist preacher from the 8th century Guru Dongmar. The locals now consider him to be saints. The lake is located on the territory of Sikkim State, at the height of 5 210 meters above sea level. Each year thousands of pilgrims overcome a complicated way to visit the sanctuary. People believe in the miraculous power of the sea water and the fact that it can heal any disease.
Most travelers visit Gurudongmar in the period from the end of corn to the end of October. In the other months most of the lake is usually frozen. The Hochgebirgssee is surrounded by many beautiful legends. According to one of them, the Tibetan Guru Nanak Dev visited the lake a few centuries ago. On the shore of the lake he has found the old staff from which he has made the cane. When the Guru returned home from a distant voyage and dug his cane into the ground, he saw the young branches on the lifeless staff a few days later. And a few days later, the staff strangely turned into the tree with a lush crown and unusual round leaves.
Since the ancient times the well-known Buddhist teachers visit the lake. They hold Gurudongmar as a valuable source of divine power. The lake has a unique peculiarity - even in the highwinter, when the temperature in the mountains drops to -35 degrees, part of the lake never freezes. The scientists can not explain this phenomenon, and the locals believe that the lake does not freeze thanks to the blessings of the great gurus. Even in winter, its healing waters are available to all pilgrims and visitors.
