Steinheimer Becken, Germany

From series “Largest Meteorite Craters on Earth”
Steinheim crater located in the community of Steinheim am Albuch is open for curious tourists in Germany. While strolling through the territory, admiring the green meadows and  fabulously beautiful houses of local residents, it’s difficult to assume that at this moment you are in the middle of a huge meteorite crater. The structure is quite large, its diameter is about 3.8 km. Just standing on the hill, you can fully appreciate a uniqueness of the landscape.

The crater has been formed more than 14 million years ago. As it was found out in the course of the research, for millions of years it has being completely filled with water. At the time when the first settlements appeared at the territory of the crater, the lake has long been dry. Over millions of years, under an influence of natural factors and human activities, a unique landscape in the region has been changing dramatically.

Researchers were engaged in studies for more than a decade. In 1978, a museum for those interested in the history of the fall of the meteorite was opened right in the crater. This geological area also features two tiny and incredibly lovely towns, Steinheim and Sontheim. One of the main attractions of these places is an ancient monastery. From the tourist point of view, Steinheim crater it is considered one of the most interesting and attractive in the world. Next - Rochechouart Crater
