West Side Market, USA

From series “Monuments of Byzantium: the most famous buildings”
Year: 1912.

The West Side Market is a true Cleveland historic landmark. It is the oldest active market in the city. The opening of the market took place in 1840. The building originally built for it was quite small. The city's population grew over the years. The market has expanded several times for this reason. The building, which visitors to Cleveland can see today, was finally completed in 1912. It remains almost unchanged to the present time.

West Side Market, USA The old market continues to operate today. About a hundred kiosks are located in the building. You can buy popular products, farm delicacies, and a lot of other national specialties there. The market building is of great architectural value for the city. It has unique features of the Byzantine style. The building managed to preserve the high clock tower, as well as the unusual roof of the vaulted shape. The building is built of brick. Therefore, such a vaulted ceiling looks very impressive from the inside.

There are no large chandeliers, typical for buildings of this scale, in the market building. Dozens of spotlights replace them. These lights are distributed over the surface of the ceiling. The city authorities do not stop upgrading and improving the historic building. New storage facilities were built in it not so long ago. A new heating system was also installed here. The first major reconstruction of the building in many years was completed in 2004. The celebration of the anniversary of the historical market took place in 2012. West Market is a true living history of Cleveland. Many stalls have been working in it for decades. They belong to hereditary farmers. To the beginning - Basilica di San Lorenzo
