Hagia Sophia, Turkey

From series “Monuments of Byzantium: the most famous buildings”
Year: 537.

Hagia Sophia has been a hallmark of Istanbul for hundreds of years. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site today. The very first cathedral was built in its place by order of Emperor Constantine in 360. As shown by the research of archaeologists, the ancient acropolis was located in its place earlier. Its surviving fragments were actively used during construction. The very first cathedral was destined to last only 75 years. It was destroyed by fire.

Hagia Sophia, Turkey A new cathedral was built in its place. It didn't last long. It, too, was destroyed by fire in 532. Visitors to Istanbul can see the unique religious monument today. It was built during the reign of Emperor Justinian I. The scale of construction was truly grandiose. According to historical data, more than 10,000 people took part in the construction of the cathedral. It is not surprising that at such a pace, a large and incredibly beautiful cathedral was built in just 5 years.

The solemn consecration of the cathedral took place in 537. It continues to be one of the main symbols of the city for almost fifteen hundred years from this moment. Hagia Sophia is located in the heart of the historic district today. It is surrounded by spectacular buildings of various periods. The religious monument attracts travelers with its unique interior design. A unique painting has been preserved on the walls and ceiling in it. Tall columns and other stone features are also preserved in the cathedral. Beautiful chandeliers in the medieval style illuminate the huge hall of the cathedral. Natural light penetrates through 40 windows on a sunny day. Next - Wilshire Boulevard Temple
