Teufelsberg, Germany

From series “Abandoned Places of the Earth with Distinct Marks of Civilization”
Year: 1963.

In the western part of Berlin, there is Teufelsberg deserted area, also known to many citizens and tourists under the unofficial name of Devil's Mountain. That’s a vivid reminder of the Cold War. An abandoned radio station is situated on the hill. Once, the base was one of the largest in the world. It served for one purpose - the interception of radio signals from the Soviet Union. Teufelsberg hill is artificial. It was formed in 1963 from the rubble that remained after the end of World War II.

Teufelsberg, Germany During the war years, a Nazi military school was located on site of the hill. The allies tried unsuccessfully to destroy it. Subsequently, they simply buried the school building under the 120-meter-thick layer of debris that remained from the destroyed neighbouring buildings. Since then, Teufelsberg Hill gained the informal name, Devil's Mountain. When the Berlin Wall fell, the station lost its primary importance. It is now abandoned and its building is badly damaged.

After closure, the radio station building changed several owners who planned to open a variety of public institutions. None of these projects has been approved by the government in Berlin, so the building remained in ruins and slowly deteriorated. Today, the main guests of these places are graffiti artists, as well as curious tourists, who like to walk through the abandoned places. On weekends, Christopher Mclaren, who is a former employee of the radio station, arranges amazing tours aimed at fans of spy novels. Next - Plymouth
