One of Ostend's most iconic attractions is the Zeilschip Mercator ship moored off the North Sea coast. The barquentine was designed and built by GL Watson & Co as a training ship for the Belgian merchant fleet. The ship was first launched in 1932 for the Belgian-French expedition, the final destination of which was Tahiti. During the Second World War, the ship was used for observations. After the tragic events, the Mercator needed restoration works, which were carried out in 1951. Its current status - the floating open-air museum - the barquentine received in 1961.
Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskerk Another floating museum is IJslandvaarder Amandine, which was built for fishing purposes in 1960. Onboard the ship, you will find out a lot of interesting information on sailing and fishing. It sailed around the area of southern Iceland in summer and off the North Sea shores in winter. After the Icelandic Cod Wars, there were only two options: to leave the ship in domestic waters or around Iceland. The ship owners preferred the second one. In 1982, a sad incident that happened to the ship took the lives of two fishermen and two rescuers. In 1995, it was discovered in the depths of the sea, and five years later it was lifted out.

For those who like exploring defensive structures, it is worth mentioning such a landmark as Fort Napoleon. As the name implies, it was built in the Napoleonic era, in 1811, specifically for the War of the Fifth Coalition - it was expected that the British would attack here. But this was not destined to come true, and the fortress was used as a barracks and arsenal until 1814. That same year, when the French occupation ended, the building was abandoned. During the First World War, the Germans used the fort as residential buildings. The headquarters of German artillery was based here during the Second World War. Later it was decided to convert the fortification into a museum.
Leopold II Many tourists arriving in the city by train immediately pay attention to the magnificent railway station building - Station Oostende. Among other monuments of sacred architecture, there are several more to be highlighted - luckily, the city has plenty of them. A Neo-Gothic masterpiece - the Sint Jozefskerk - was built in the second half of the 19th century and it is unique for being visible from virtually any angle in the city center. An interesting shrine to visit is Neo-Gothic Dominicanenkerk dating back to 1883. During its construction, architects were inspired by the church of the same name in Ghent. The temple also features wonderful stained glass windows depicting the scenes from the life of the holy members of the Dominican Order. One should never pass by other beautiful churches - Parochie Sint-Jan Baptist and Heilig-Hartkerk. Also, besides numerous Christian shrines, the city has its synagogue - Synagoge Oostende.
Ostend Museums in Ostend are worthy of a visit too. For example, this is the Stadsmuseum Oostende where you can get acquainted with everything related to the city - history, the lifestyle of the citizens' ancestors, their traditional folk craft. Right on the North Sea shore, you can find a beautiful sculptural composition called "Rock Strangers" by Belgian artist Arne Quinze. This is a very quiet and peaceful park, as befits all Japanese-style gardens.
