Centre Pompidou-Metz, France

From series “Famous buildings of Postmodern architecture”
Year: 2010.

The opening of a branch of one of the most famous museums in the world took place in Metz in 2010. This is the Centre Pompidou. A unique building was built for the cultural center. About 69 million euros were invested in its construction. The unusual floating roof became the main feature of the building. Some compare it to a Chinese hat. It resembles an alien ship to others. The competition was announced before the construction of the museum. Architect Shigeru Ban from Japan was the winner.

Centre Pompidou-Metz, France It was decided to build a cultural center on the territory of an extensive park. A functional museum building would blend in with the vegetation surrounding it. The idea to cover it with an unusual roof to make it more visible brought victory to the bold project. The museum is quite large. Despite this, its building seems airy and weightless. More than 700 works of art are stored in the museum. There are works by Matisse, Miro, Kandinsky, Picasso, Chagall, Pollock, and Dubuffet among them.

The complex curved shape is characteristic of the museum building. The frame forms the basis of its original roof. It is made exclusively of natural wood. The natural material was used especially since the museum is located on the territory of the park. Practical teflon was used in the construction of the roof. Fiberglass also became the material for it. These materials allow the construction to successfully resist the vagaries of nature. The area of the original roof is 8,000 square meters. It is an independent structure. The roof is not directly connected to the museum building.

A spacious lobby is located on the ground floor of the museum. There is also a cafe and gift shop here. The unique exhibition hall has become one of the main features of the interior design. Its ceiling height is 10 meters. A few museums have such spacious exhibition halls. There is an opportunity to present even very large works of art and installations in the Pompidou-Metz center. Visitors to the center can walk through the surrounding cherry orchard after the tour. Next - Centro Colombo
